A while back (prolly 2 months) I noticed a high pitched, almost screeching sound coming from one of the fans inside of my case. Well, after looking it at all of my fans I found out it was the fan on my heatsink that was making this hideous sound. At first I thought that the processor might be getting too hot and that the fan was trying to spin faster to cool it down thus causing the noise. So I backed it down from 2.6ghz to 2.4ghz. The temps before hovered around 54-56 degrees celsius and they dropped some after I lowered it down to 2.4ghz. The fan still makes that loud annoying noise and it will still spin up very fast even when I'm just doing regular tasks such as e-mail. The fan speed will also jump up and down as will the pitch and noise of the sound that it makes. My system will also randomly lock up (has only done this twice in the past couple of months) and I have gotten two BSOD's in the last two month's as well. Also within the past two months it takes my computer forever to shut down, it will sit at the windows is now shutting down screen for at least 45 seconds or more. So do you guys think it is my processor overheating or could it possibly be something else?

*UPDATE*
I just lowered it down from 2.4ghz to 2.2ghz and it's still doing it. Temps are hovering between 50-52 degrees celsius.
 
well, have u tried cleaning the heatsink, get rid of all the dust...if any. u might wanna considerer the bearings in the fan might be a bit busted...as for your BSoD's, i have no idea.
 
Are those temps too high? I don't think they are but then again i'm not sure. I need to reformat anyway and I'm sure that will take care of the lock ups, bsod's, and the long shut down times. I was just wondering if they were all somehow related. I haven't tried cleaning it but it's not that dirty/dusty. I will clean it anyway and see if it helps though.
 
well, ur temps are not too high, but they're a tad high. of all the computers I've seen, half the time the PC's are slow or BSoDing and locking, its because no1 has ever been bothered error checking/defragging it. i suggest u try that before a reformat.
 
My Opteron 165 @ 2.6Ghz, 1.4v, idles around 35°C and reaches 51°C during load (STOCK heatpipe heatsink!!!). I think your temps are high, lol. Run Prime95 SmallFFTs for as long as you can (around 24 hours). If it crashes, something's wrong with your CPU (its either not getting enough voltage, its overheating, or it can't handle the speed you're forcing upon it). You can run memtest overnight to rule out the RAM.

I have error checked, defraged, virus/spyware scan, registry scan, disk cleaner, and everything else I can think of. When I first oc'd it to 2.6ghz it ran prime95 stable for 12 hours without any errors. I figured that my temps might be a little high, maybe when I get my new case in (thermaltake armor) the temps will go down. I noticed that my system/case temps are higher than what I would like them to be so i'm thinking that might be the cause. My voltage is at 1.45 and memtest ran just fine the last time I used it.

Thats nice that everything ran fine before... but you're problem is now. So, run them again... now, lol.
