Heatsink not really warm at all

So, on an Athlon 64, if it were running around 60 degrees celsius, the heatsink should be fairly warm shouldn't it?

I'm using a Thermaltake SilentBoost K8 hsf, and my BIOS is telling me my processor is about 60 degrees under full load, and my heatsink is hardly warm at all, not cool, but definitely not warm.

I'm thinking one of two things are happening....

1. My BIOS temps are getting read wrong (using a MSI K8N Neo Platinum mobo, with the latest beta BIOS 1.45, and also my Athlon 64 is the 3200+ Clawhammer, so I don't think this is the problem. From my understanding, most of the incorrect temp readings come from New Castle cores)

2. I am just not getting any heat transferred into the heatsink? (Granted, I know I probably need more thermal compound than I have on it right now, now I just have some generic stuff on it, and not much of it)

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

did you spread out the "generic stuff" evenly?

it's not a thermal pad, is it?

try reseating the HSF, and cleaning the HS surface and the CPU surface w/ 90+% Rubbing Alcohol (available at WalMart) and Lint-Free Cloths (i.e. Coffee Filters, or the Maxwell CD Cleaner Cloths, without any solution on them...)
then try re-applying the paste as per these instructions (yes they work even if you don't have Arctic Silver) http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm

This is where the good ol fashiond "if it's stable you're ok" comes in. As long as no alarms go off/ thermal shutdown kicks in you are okay in my book. My personal guess is the beta bios.

and one more thing....how do you get full load in the BIOS?

Hehe, good call :)

Well, CoreCenter (the MSI monitoring app) is telling me I'm at 60 degrees under full load :)

Aight, thanks then

I have some arctic silver 5 on order, will be applying it once it gets here, should hopefully cool this beast down a tad, in the mean time, i'll just live with the high temps

Thanks

Just for shits try reseating the HSF with whatever TIM you have on hand

Hehe, I would, but I don't have anymore TIM on hand, used it up the last time :)

See, I was retarded and put way too much TIM on the first time, so I thought I should try and clean it up, maybe that would help my CPU run cooler. I cleaned it up too much though, and now I am lacking enough generic TIM. Oh well though, AS5 should be here next week, hopefully that'll cure my problems, otherwise it's time to buy a new hsf.
