Heatshrink question...

I actually use a lighter. One of those really long ones for lighting grills or pilot lights. As long as I'm really careful and keep the flame low, it works great.

I used to use a lighter but now I have a heat gun. You can get one at Harbor Freight (online or nearest store) for $10.

get a heat gun only way to shrink. Using a lighter sucks takes a long time burns up your thumb if your using a bic and might burn up something you might not want to burn up.

I don't know who makes them, but I've seen these little tools made especially for this.

It's a little U-shaped thing on a handle. It goes around the wire and you press a button, and it heats up to shrink it down.

It's very controlled heat and you can get into tight places with it.

If it's MIL spec were all screwed $$$ wise. I may have seen it while in MERP school in the Navy.

Heat gun... Can get in to any tight area air will flow to...

Lighters are for the birds, they do the job, but fairly inaccurate, too much heat for the job, and can leave residual black marks from fumes of burning plastic if the plastic gets too hot... Flame also tends to cause come heat shrink to turn brittle because it was exposed to too much heat. The shrink only needs a couple of hundred degrees F to shrink, not the temperature flame is going to put out. Heat guns are capable of high heat, but you have to leave the gun trained on the object for longer periods of time... Stick with the right tool for the job if you can...

Plus heat guns are quite useful for other stuff.

A lighter works great, just hold it a few centimeters from the heatshrink, and rotate :D
