I recently bought a gateway mt6840, and everything is working fine except for the fact that i notice the temps get above 80 C when under load for a little while. This is while using orthos of course. when i just use it for web browsing, the temps are fine in the 50's-60's. I was wondering if these high temps were normal under that kind of load, or if i should try replacing the thermal paste and seeing if i could lower the temps maybe. i dont have any problems with the computer locking up or anything, i'm just worried the high temps might shorten its life.

Replacing the thermal paste won't do much. Clean out dust if there is any.

Most laptops I've seen hit 70 under load.

You can undervolt with the NHC program, I used to get 70+ on my laptop, with undervolt it never goes over 50 now.

After my notebook has been on awhile it hovers at 65 routinely. That's just using browser.

i have same type of question.. what is the max temp i can use it at.. i bought a few laptop coolers but they are not that great.. might try and make my own 120mm fan laptop coolers

there shouldnt be any dust in it since i just bought it about a week ago. with NHC, it shows the cpu temp to be about 15 c lower then what coretemp shows. so what one should i believe? i undervolted a little, and now it reaches 75 c instead of about 85. a little better

The 70c I mentioned would be the external temp, Core Temp always reads hotter than the external sensors for obvious reasons. It appears the temps you're getting are normal.

ok thanks, those temps seem reasonable now. never really get above 60
