Just got my new case, psu, mobo and gfx and put it all together. Strange thing is my cpu temp is now ... let`s call it very high. 56 c at idle is alot more than it should be, considering it`s a 3.0 gig c. Bought it this january so it must be a c.

Anyways, this is with stock fan / sink combo. Just bought a big zalman copper sink / fan to test with, but I guess my dreams about clocking the thing to an ok speed is gone now, with such extreme heat from it. Have checked and rechecked that the goop ( arctic silver ) is applied correctly.

Any hinters about what could be wrong? In my crappy shuttle, the idle temp was 45 deg c.

Not sure exactly what the problem is, but you've checked in the bios that this is the temp as well as with other monitoring software right?

Anyways, here is what you should have done.

Make sure you have a few extra exhaust fans for your case besides the psu fan.

You should have cleaned of the old thermal compound completely with some alcohol prior to applying the silver.

For the application of the arcitc silver you only want a tiny dab (about the size of a tiny grainof rice) right in the center of the heatspreader of the cpu. Then you want to take that zalman hsf and put it right on top and rotate it back and forth like 30 degrees.

The point of the silver is simply to fill in the tiny cracks or lines in the heatspreader. So the hsf should make complete contact with the heatspreader on your cpu.

Then personally I've found the zalmann hsf will not screw down to the socket. You have to hold the side bars up while making sure the hsf is completely on the cpu and slowly screw in each side.

Hope that helps.

If none of this was the case, you might want to list some specs of your rig and whether this heat was an issue prior to installing the zalman. I'm assuming not, but just to be sure.

Ok. What I`ve done so far is using the stock sink / fan that came with the cpu. I have 3 exhaust fans in my rig ( cooler master wave case ) so that should not be the issue. Old thermal compound was completely cleaned off, and new compound was applied, then smeared over the the whole contact point of the cpu as instructed by intel ( I am fairly sure this is the right way to do it with intel cpus ) Then applied stock sink / fan and in bios I idle at about 58 celc. I tried checking with motherboard manager, but it was way off on the readings so I uninstalled it.

I`m just wondering if this could be a bad production. Maybe a 2.8 set up wrong or something, because heaps of people I`ve talked to thats got the 3.0 c set up with a stock system run way cooler than my system.

Anyways, zalman going on this rig in a couple of days, we`ll see then. Hope to get the temp down, but this doesnt look good for clocking at all

If you put too much thermal compound on there it won't conduct heat properly.

hmmm, if you're using arctic silver I wouldn't smear and spread it all over the cpu. You simply put a tiny dab the size of a grain of rice in the center. Then get the hsf completely on it and twist it clockwise 30 degrees then counterclockwise 30 degrees. The heat will eventually spread the silver and it will i guess melt or fill the crevices on the heatspreader of the cpu.

If I'm understanding your version of spreading silver all over your cpu, well...don't do that because the heatsink is supposed to make complete contact with the heatspreader of your cpu and having globs and layers of paste or silver between your cpu and hsf means no heat transfer, which equals.........high temps.
