Heat probe necessary?

I got my parts to put together my first water cooling setup.
I went with the koolance 350 for my cpu waterblock. The very first thing in the instructions is not to forget to tape the heat probe to the side of the block. My only real problem with this is that there was no heat probe in the box, and believe me I've looked everywhere.
Is it really necessary?
I'm about 4 hours into my 24 hour external leak test and I'd like to put it all together tomorrow night.
I could prolly head down to the local computer shop and pick up a probe if you guys think I really should have it, I'd just rather not wait for shipping. Or just do without it alltogether....
Any thoughts?
 
no there is no reason to have it.. cpu has an internal diode sensor that is far better then any external probe would be..
 
That was why I didn't understand why the koolance literature was so adamant about it.
No leaks yet :)

Then you would use something like this, not a foil sensor taped to the side of the block.

The Temp probe is there if you're using a Koolance system along with their waterblock. Koolance systems require that at lease one temp probe is hooked up !

What oldbrave said. Koolance kits like the Exos-2 include a temp probe and require it for their temperature display and emergency shutdown features. Modern CPU's have thermal shutdown built-in, but back when they didn't a pump failure could kill your system if you didn't have the temp probe hooked up.

An inline coolant temperature monitor wouldn't be good for emergency thermal shutdowns unless it was very close to the CPU. Since modern CPUs have thermal protection built in its a moot point.
 
System is running beautifully, and no I don't have a koolance system. I only have a koolance waterblock on the cpu and a koolance full coverage block on my 5870. Mixed and matched everything else. Fesser xchange thick 360 rad, swiftech mcp655 pump, dangerden res, and used enzotech pressure fittings with 1/2" tygon tubing. I did use some koolance fluid, but truth be told I got it more for the fill spout on the bottle than for anything else.

Running prime95 to see how stable I am at my current overclock, temps holding steady at 41 degrees under full load. I'm lovin this. At stock with the stock cooler I hit 67 degrees at full load.
