Heat issue?

Running machine in sig for about 3 hours constant on NFSU. Stopped playing for a few. Went to restart the program, and it would "reset" the desktop. (go to black, and then slowly reappear). It did this with all 3D related programs. I rebooted like any Windows user does, and tried it again.. same thing. I took the side of the case off to check the temp of the videocard and cpu heat-sink, and both were hot, but not what I would call excessive. Sat with side off of case for about 5 mins, and the program started with no problem. I'm running 1 100mm exhaust in the back, 2 fans in TT PSU, and stock cooling on VPU and CPU.

Do I need more cooling? Also, dropped clock on VPU to 405/340 when I was playing.

Oh, and when the program would crash, it would come up with the window, "Windows Explorer has closed unexpectidely, Send error report" when I would try to restart the program(before I opened the case)
 
It's summer, so temperatures are rising.

Yeah, you'll probably need an intake fan to get some cool air into the case. Is this a system you built, or a Dell/Compaq/HP/etc. computer?

And getting a better HSF would probably help things too.
 
Gateway, that I've tweaked.. a bit. Just ordered a VGA Silencer, will see how that goes. If not, then will upgrade CPU cooler.
 
Well damn. Just played for an hour or so. Got done, placed a fan (window) in front of pc for about 10 mins now. Still doing the same thing as above. WTF? Maybe not a heat issue? I dunno.. getting annoying.
 
Try opening the case and see if it continues. I have a feeling its not a temp issue.
 
Can't tell what temps I'm hitting, I have the Crap-o-matic older Intel MB. And don't have the XT ver. of 9800. Have a VGA Silencer on the way.. we'll see in a couple of days I guess. (even if it doesn't help it, time to do some serious overclocking.. :D)

Maybe a DirectX9 issue?
 
Played for about 5 mins... and now does the same thing. Ran Sandra and DirectX test, and no errors showed. And still having problems relaunching the problem. I'm using Symantec corporate ed. and use spybot/adaware to keep the machine clean.

Any takers? I HATE problems like this.
 
It probably is a heat issue. You just don't like to listen.

Maybe if you introduced more case fans to your system, you wouldn't have the problem.

Actually there cheif, I do listen, and did add an Antec 80mm fan in the front of the case blowing in directly towards the Video card. So now I have a total of 4 fans moving air around the case in my approx. 70 degree basement... and it still does it. And running Vid card at stock speeds too.

PSU Fans do not count.

It's going to probably be one of three things:

CPU, VideoCard or Power.

Get one of these temp sensor to find out how hot your CPU is getting during gaming.

Also check your case temp. It's only like 82°F in my room, but my case temp is 86°F w/ 4 fans (2 intake, 2 exhaust.. and OMG, TWO IN THE PSU THAT MAKES SIX I GUESS THEN HUH?!?! tard). Just because it's 70°F in your basement doesn't mean it isn't 90 something inside your case.

And check the rails coming from your TT PSU.

I guess I don't understand why they wouldn't count. Okay, they're not 120mm fans, but they're still exhausting hot air. I will see what happens when I put the VGA Silencer on it.

Also, you're an asshole. This whole forum is for helping people out, not insulting them. You have issues. There have been people who ask "stupid" (read as much sarcasm into that as you wish) and I've helped them out. Again dude, you're an asshole.
 
ok, d/l Intel's active monitor, and it shows 46C at idle for the processor, and 37C for "system zone 1", wherever that is.

High/Low? Time for a Zalman copper cooler?
 
Well...I'm back with this thread.... installed the new fans (120mm exhaust, VGA silencer) and such.... seemed to do the trick for a while. Now it's doing it again. The power supply seems fine using the monitor, and the temps are all in check.

This is driving me insane!

in this case my best guess would be that as soon as your PSU heats up, its capacity drops, and your anemic on the +12V as a possible contributing factor
with overall heat issues you also need to address
