Heat distribution between cores

After a short stint with the stock CPU Heatsync on my new i7-2600k, I installed a Scythe
"SHURIKEN Rev.B " 3Heat Pipes CPU Cooler.

This is my first multi core intel cpu and I am not sure if I mounted the cooler right. There is a 10deg C. difference between the core;s. Like Core #0 - 31C, Core $1 - 33C, Core #2 - 38C and Core #3 - 41C.

When stress testing it with Prime95, they will go as high as Core #2- 84 & Core $3 - 83C .. with Core #0 - 72C.

The instructions for the heatsync said to aply a thin amount to the CPU, so I just put a small smear all over the top. What is the correct way to apply the paste? Does it make sense to have one core running 10deg hotter than another?

thanks

Most people place a small dot the size of a pea in the middle of the heatsink and just squish it on with the HS/Fan. I haven't ever had that much of a discrepancy in heat between cores but it is possible that you applied the paste incorrectly. With the "heatpipe" coolers, you need to put small lines down the pipes because there are usually small gaps between the pipes and heatsink and this helps to fill them in.

Edit: Also, if the cores are different temps but they are all passing the stress test you are probably ok

The Scythe Shuriken doesn't have the heatpipes in direct contact with the cpu. Has some nickle plate between the heatpipes and cpu.

Anyhow I apply a small pea size and let the pressure spread it out.

Heres a video you can see the difference between pea size vs line vs spreading.
