I've been trying to find a good quality headset mic for my PC. Due to my setup a desktop Mic is impossible and with my custom 8.2 Surround sound speakers I don't want speakers on the headset. Do these even exist anymore? I used to have a labtec LVA-7331 but due to the wife stepping on it and the cat trying to make a meal out of the cord its dead now. Any recommendations?

well you could use a bluetooth reciever and a cellphone headset, but one way or the other most headsets will cover one ear up

I have a logitech headset that came with a webcam, it's got got small speakers and a behind-the-head setup, and I found I could flip it upside down around my neck and have the mic boom sitting in front of my mouth. Something kinda like this, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826106931
but mine's an even cheaper build. Maybe look for something simliar but the cheapest you can find.

Thanks for the replies,

I don't want a USB mic as those have notoriously bad quality. I'd prefer a standard mic. I'll check on that one from newegg but right now it appears the site is down. Anyone else have any options?

The only one I've found for that purpose that isn't outrageous is this one. Quality is ok, though it doesn't handle high SPL so you'll have to watch out for clipping.

Anything better than that and you are talking over $100 for a professional mic. Those are really nice, but perhaps a bit much for gaming. If you are willing to spend a lot though, I'll make a recommendation.

Depending on how much more than $100 I might be interested, I used the mic I had for more than gaming and would like a nice quality one. I used the one I had for 4 years and it also survived 2 moves so spending a little extra for something nice is an option.

Probably between $200-600 depending on features. Also, it is going to be a condenser mic and thus is going to need a separate preamp to provide phantom power and bring the signal up to line level.

For example a Countryman isomax headset will run you somewhere in the $200-300 depending on source and features. That's a pretty nice mic with a back-of-the-head style band.

If you wanted one of their higher end, more invisible E6 mics that sit lightly on one ear you are talking more like $400-500.

Then factor in probably $50 for the preamp unit (something like this would work nice).

There are probably some cheaper mic options out there, but I'm not sure how much or how good they'd be.

Now please note, you are getting what you pay for here. Countryman mics are professional grade. These are the kind of things singers use on stage. They are full frequency, durable, support high SPLs, etc, etc. You could probably record the vocals for an album with one if you wanted. However, you sure as hell pay for it.

I'll probably eventually get an E6 for myself, but I haven't been able to bring myself to spend that much.

One other thing to note is that a lavalier mic is probably a bad idea. They are often cheaper and there are even some low end "gamer" ones out there (Zalman makes one I think). However the problem is that they aren't close enough to your mouth. This means they are going to pick up sound coming from your speakers and annoy the other players. You want something that is right up near your mouth so that it can be low gain, and not pick up much background noise.
