I am looking for headphones for my iPod and was looking for some recommendations. I have been reading up and seen some good reviews about the HD 201s. I am looking for over the ear phones or even some in ear phones. I prefer for them to be closed cans. Again, under the price of $50.

I basically listen to some trance, rap, light rock. Any suggestions for some headphones??

HD497 for 37 dollars @ amazon

its sorta uncomfortable for me because it clamps on my head a bit too tight

I think your best bet is gonna be the PX100's because they can fold up and are very light, but they're open cans. Haven't heard them myself, but reviews look pretty good. If you can spend 10 more dollars, don't need folding design, and want lots of bass, then the HD212 Pro's may be what you're looking for. My friend has them and they sound good and are comfortable.

Are those open though??
partially closed, depends on your ear size and shape. Not the usual headphone design thats for sure.

I would like the PX 100s a lot more if they were sealed. I want the headphones to be somewhat portable. The HD212s are a little too big for listening to at the library. I still obviously want quality. Are the AKG K26p any good?

Just out of curiosity, why closed headphones?

If you don't mind open, the HD497's are ok for 40$us. They can be driven off of portable devices with ease.

As always, check out your local audio stores. They may have some headphones on sale and/or on display so you can listen to them. I just picked up a pair of BeyerDynammic headphones (DT990 Pro's) for 130$us New. Can't beat it. They also had the 131's for 40$.

Oh, I just noticed you asked about the AKG's.
That begs the question, "How long do you expect to listen to music?"
20 minutes? 4 hours? When you start talking about the AKG's and grado's.... you start getting into ok sounding headphones, but they are not the most comfertable to most people. Some produce a "swamp effect" in your ear....... and its sooo horrible. that's another place where the HD497's excell, they don't produce the "swamp effect" because they are open and not directly ON the ears, but rather around them.

I want them to be closed because I listen to them in the library. I can't have others listen to what I am listening to. I usually listen to music for hours at a time, so yeah I need them to be comfortable too.

The problem with suggesting phones is sound is so subjective. The AKG K26p's have an appreciation thread at headfi however there aren't alot of posts in it.
I would probably be more likely to suggest in ear phones. I own the sharp md33s which are $39us from audiocubes. I enjoy them quite a bit with all types of music. The creative labs ep-630 are the same as the sharps but I can't seem to find any retailers for them.

If the krandog wants the headphones to be comfortable, that kind of rules out In Ear headphones.

I don't think this is true. I have a pair of Sony EX-71's and I think they are the most comfortable headphones I have heard. Now if only the sound was as good as the comfort...

Edit: Of course, YMMV.

I love my HD201's. They are good for listening to music on planes or at home, but obviously they are full size so no jogging.

What does YMMV mean?

Anyway, as you can see krandog, people's opinion vary greatly. I wish I knew of a headphone for under 100$ that was closed, sounded ok, felt good, and was eaisly driven... but i don't. So that's about all the help I can be.

~Good luck

Your Milage May Vary

In any case, I think the HD201s may be a good choice, it is somewhat slim/small enough to fit into a bag for on-the-go purposes, and should hold up as long as you don't jump up and down on the bag. A collapsible headphone like the HD280, although a bit out of your price range, could be another candidate.

I agree, my md33s are so comfy now that I don't even notice they are in sometimes. When I first got them they took about a week to get used to but now they are great.
Plus since he said:

I think I was justified in recommending them.
Since people seem to like the px100s what about the px200s? They are closed and just as portable, I think they are more expensive. Not sure if you can find them under $40.

Does anyone have any experience / comments about the Sharp MD33? I have been reading about these canalphones and they say some things about needing an adapter in order to be used in anything other than a Sharp MiniDisc Player. I will be using headphones for my ipod. Can someone expand on what this adapter does/is?

I have the md33s and yes they need an adapter, they come with it though. It's also a much needed extension cable.
I think they are really good phones for the money. I haven't even been tempted to upgrade my portable solution.

The sharps are made for 4 pole connections (2 channels and a ground for each i believe). They come with an extension cable that's 3 pole so you don't have to worry abotu buying anythign else. I've had them for a while and have 2 complaints:

1) With the extension cable, the cable is way too long which is a pain if you're planning on working out with them on.
2) I've found its hard to maintain a good seal with them. I've tried all 3 sizes of the tips they give you, but just moving around (especially if sweating at all) one side seems to pop out. I think its partially because the long cord pulls down one side the whole time if it's just hanging.

As far as bonus' though.

1) They do sound good
2) Cost

I'm plannign on upgrading to some ety er6i's, or maybe going hardcore with some UE super.fi pro's.

Another vote for the EX71

Extremely comfortable (not as comfortable as full-sized cans, but you ain't getting those for $50 :-P)

Sound is not bad... unlike some other phones I can mention

That is the one thing I don't like about them, the bizarre left-channel-cable-is-shorter-than-right-channel-cable cable.
I'm not sure if the creative version(EP-630 i think) has the bizarre cable or not.

Is the adapter that comes with Sharp's MD33 special, or can I go to Radioshack and get one that isn't so damn long?

I dont think it's special at all. Since the two grounds exist in the same spot the shared ground exists on a normal plug. If you use a normal extender it will just make the separate grounds a shared ground. I tested this with a 1/8th to 1/4 adapter and the phones worked just fine.

Are there any stores that have nicer headphones? Not like a Best Buy or Circuit City, but another electronics store where you can try on headphones? I live in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago for any Chicagoians who wish to help me out.

when i was looking for some headphones, people suggested I go to guitar center. I got my HD485's though so i didn't need to go. So i'm guessing you should try some music shops.

After hours of searching, I bought Panasonic's RP-HJE50S earphones. They were only $28 on Price Grabber and these were reviewed to be better than the Sony EX-71's. :)
