Currently I have the Koss UR29.
I snagged these at my local BX prior to deploying since I broke my older pair. I figured the colapseable design would help in travel and circumaural cans would be comfortable for watching movies in my bunk as to not disturb my roomates.

Well, yes they are easy to cram into my duffel, but no they werent comfortable (not enough padding, speaker grills resting on my ears) and to top it off the mid/high range overpowers any bass they might produce. Thusly, I am dissappointed.

I guess I've always wanted to break into the audiophile catagory, but nevery really decided on what to buy. Primarily I game, but I can forgo positional 5.1 audio for higher quality stereo. (seeing as how you can actually surpass 5.1 with a decent sound algorithm and an amp) I also watch ripped movies and music and mess around on my PSP during downtime.

Here's what I use as source: Macbook (black) no ext soundcards or amps. PSP, and back home I will be building/buying a desktop with an X-fi chipset. I'm looking for suggestions and places to order a set of cans and a small portable amp (CMOY?) that I can transition over to a more fixed amp later on. If they ship to an APO, that is a plus. That way I wont have to get it shipped to my wife in escrow.

I'm willing to spend upwards of $200-300USD on the cans and since I'm new to amps whatever isn't going to break my bank.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Beyerdynamic DT-770/80 (these are tough enough to literally be run over by a car) with an eBay Cmoy amp

Hey guy,,I have a Mister X portable amp custom built for Iraq. Lasted 15 months in Mosul, Al Anbar and the quiet streets of Bagdad. Needs a 9volt battery..Shoot me a PM..Trust me.. the price is right for a Soldier;)

wouldnt you be worried that you cant hear people taking pot shots at you, I know i'd be worried if i couldnt hear them with the headphones on.

He will probably be inside a FOB..That is where the comps. can be hooked up. No HeadPhones on patrol.

Actually, I'm on an Air Base. And work in a Comm. compound so I'm as far away from enemy fire as I can be. Yea I know, its not as glorious as groundpounding, but it's a job that must be done for REMFs to know whats goin on. And radio/net traffic wont monitor itself.

So Beyer's (770/80ohm or the pros with an amp?), I've also heard that ATH-A900 Art are decent. I have no idea what Darth Beyers are. And I've been leaning toward Senns, somewhere in the hd595 or the hd650s

oh and sdgserv, the proxy blocks photobucket as well...

No matter what you do..you have all my respect;)

I will try something else so you can see
The HD 650's need a little more horsepower to shine..595 would work for you.

Are you saying the 650s (or equivilant) cant be pushed by the amp you are talking about (or equivilant)? What about the Beyer's?

And honestly WTF are Darth Beyers? I've read about recables and balancing but that introduces the need for more in-btwn equipment to hookup to a lappy/ipod/psp.

I'm learning, but I have a bad habbit of diving headfirst into a steaming pile only to find out the mound of daisies was just next door.

The 80ohm Beyer's will actually work just fine without an amp, but they do benefit greatly from having one.

Darth Beyers

Oh wow, those are sexy. Im guessing that the recable and junctions improve the signal flow. Does the wood help with the sound as well, or just look pretty?

Though I would buy some of those in a heartbeat, I think they would be wasted in this environment. Who can recoment some IEMs that dont fall out with activity. In the past earbuds, even with foam covers, and some with the formable foam plug haven't stayed in my head with even light running.

A small FYI..IEM will push the sand (powder) into your ear. The Spice is every where

Well hell, if I could get some glowing blue eyes here that would bee cool. But its hard enough keeping the grit out of orifices normally.

I don't want to buy a midline set of cans, and then regret my purchase later. And I dont want to buy top of the line and have them get broken... The delima, I want the best but dont want to test it's desert-worthiness.

I'll only bump this once and let it die. So IEMs will gunk up my ears with sand/dust. And highend headphones will probably bust in this environment. Are there some midrange phones that wont suck in the long run are are able to be modded later perhaps with some higher quality cables? So far I have the Beyer DT770/80 on the list, but they seem to be hit and miss with peoples reviews.

I wish I coul test a few out before I throw down scratch.

The Beyers are great phones. Just know that they're known to be some of the most bass heavy headphones you can get and few people, if any, are going to know their durability in the environments you're going to be in. You should be able to get them for $140-170 on Ebay so they definitely aren't the most expensive headphones, but they aren't dirt cheap either. Beyers + leather earpads = heavenly comfort.
