Headphone recommendations?

I'm in the market for a good pair headphones. Unfortuneately I know very little about choosing a pair. I'm open to all suggestions such as cans that sound good with an amp and those that sound good without. I'd prefer to have a pair of cans and an amp as I think it would look cool on my desk :D . I'll be using them mostly for music. I listen to all kinds of music but mostly rock and some rap. I'll also be using them for gaming on occasion. I have only one request - no overly bright cans. My budget is no more than $200 for both the cans and amp. Any help will be much appreciated.
 
Audio-Technica A900 sounds about right. Or maybe some HD580's with a MINT amp?
 
Thanks for all the replys. The ATH-A900 look nice but i'd also like some other recommendations. I've decided to up my budget to $300. Also I will be using a AV-710 for the source so i'm starting to think i'm gonna need an amp. Maybe i'll go with an amp from Mister X. I've also heard good things about the Grado SR225 and a good amp. Although I don't know if their best suited to my kind of music.

If you are aware of the comfort issues, then the Grado SR-225 or the Alessandro MS-2 are hard to beat for rock.
 
I use Senns HD 570s. They sound good with music and great with games, although the positional audio is standard.... I've never used an amp with them, because i'm totally satisfied without one.. they were about $350aus, which is cloes to $200us..

Hows the bass on those grados. I tend to like plenty deep accurate bass (not boomy).

I've got the a500s and coming from a chaintech card, an amp will be needed. My creative card does a far better job of pushing these cans, but I want the extra quality I know is in the chaintech. Definately talk with MisterX about an amp. His prices are very reasonable for the quality parts and build you are getting (I just actually am ordering one from him today).

I've only have the lesser MS-1s, but if deep accurate bass is what you're looking for, then I think you will find it after your first 50 hours or so of burn in. You won't get boomy or anemic bass with these. The MS-1 could use just a little more bass extension. The only time I ever dislike the bass is after switching immediately from the Ety 4S. I feel like there's a very slight mid-bass hump. I guarantee that you won't be disappointed. The MS-2 have a slightly better reputation as all around cans, and the SR-225 have the best reputation as pure in your face rock cans.
 
Ok i think i've narrowed it down to the Audio-Technica A900, Grado SR-225, Alessandro MS-2, and the Sennheiser HD-580s. I almost positive I will get an amp for whatever cans I choose.
 
With an AV-710 you'll need it. Make sure you let us know how it turns out :)
 
Between HD 580 and A900 comes down to this.

And are you going to have an extra 160ish to upgrade the cable on the 580. Alot say Upgraded cable + Amp on HD 580 will push the headphones to be better than the A900's, but for 210$ + Amp on A900 its just under your budget and you'll prolly never touch another set of headphones again. :D
 
If you can use open headphones and possibly bump up the budget to include a better amp I would go with the hd580's
