Headphone recommendation

just get a good set of phones, and a separate mic.

I bought an adhesive "stick on monitor" type mic, the one that doesnt have the retarded little stick on it, and stuck it to a stick-on type cell phone belt clip. I just clip it to my shirt when playing games, works great. It's far superior to the Plantronics .90s.
 
I'm also very interested in the ATH-a500s, though I think you guys have realized they're kinda hard to find. So far only audiocubes carriest them internationally, since I think they're really only popular in japan. Here's a link:

these worth it for unamped (though maybe an amp in the future) out of my soundcard out, laptop out, or iHP-120 out? Mostly will be fore movies/games/lots o' electronica

will the 3.5mm connector on some of the phones plug into a computer sound card fine ?
also are the kinyo 5.1 headphones anygood for someone that is looking in the $50 price range for gaming cans ?
 
Mini jacks are generally referred to as 1/8 inch or 3.5mm jacks

The Audiotechnicas are really good sounding cans. Esprecially the art and ATH series.

I have several higher-end cans to include Sennheiser HD600's, HD580's, Beyerdynamic DT770's, and Audio Technica ATH-W100.

I will take the Audiotechnica's 9 out of 10 times. the other time I would take the 580's.

My roommate has a pair of Audio Technica ATH-AD7 and he loves them. I think they sound as good as the 580's with a bit more bass.

The ATH-500's must sound pretty good. The ATH-AD7's are easy to drive as they have a really low impedence. The 500's should be about the same. Right now they are driven by a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz

these are great choices, but I doubt you could find them for under $110... maybe used on the AKG K501's, but even used for under $110 is doubtfull for the other two

I would say that for unamped listening the AKG K240 Studio is a good choice... it likes an amp as does nearly any headphone, but it can live without one ;)
 
Yeah, I'd recommend the HD-497s with a separate clip-on microphone, at least that's what i use, I just clip the microphone onto the headphones cord, so I slide on my headphones and I'm ready to go.

Here is an interesting question, anyone got suggestions about where to get a quality microphone to use with separate headphones?

I have mine, but I'm sure some other people could use that information.

A clip-on mic would definitely be a good thing for me too. No way I'm not going to be using my HD650's for gaming =]
 
Since this is a recommendation thread, what do you guys think about the AKG K 1000? I'm looking to upgrade within a year or so, and I dont have a store anywhere near me that I can try headphones out. My max budget for the cans will be $700. :D I know the K1000s are power hogs, requiring at least 7w, so I will definately need a better amp.
 
Any tube-type mic should work for clip-on use. I have one from an oldschool Dell Desktop from work, it was one of those types you stick to the side of the monitor. I took it home, and stuck it to one of those Sprint-PCS stick-on belt clips for their cell phones....voila..ghetto clip-on mic, and the thing is crystal clear...all the folks on my ventrilo server are jealous :D
 
Im just vouching for Sennheiser hd-500's, I got a set yesterday after auditioning the 497's and some others as well which I cant really remember. I chose the 500's because they do have more bass,some say too much,and they just sounded much cleaner overall. Needless to say I am very very happy with the purchase.

And dont forget that you have to burn-in new headphones before you can get their full potential.

the guys @ headphone.com sure seem to like them, dunno... but definately these are not headphones, they are like head-mounted speakers lol...

Sadly, they do not come with an amp. Headphone.com recommends the Grace Design 901, but I really dont want to spend over 1k for just an amp. Any suggestions?
 
Well, I don't really have any recommendations at all, I don't know of too many amps that'll drive those things. Take a look around head-fi, ask them.. I'm sure they know better than I =] Also, take a look on audiogon, last time I checked there were several sets of Stax cans, including amps, for around 700ish [I think] Might not be AKG1000's, but they are also very expensive, esoteric headphones :D

I'll scour head-fi tonight for info. I have heard Stax (4040?) headphones in the past, and wasnt very impressed. They just didnt have the bass response I crave, but the highs and mids were absolutely perfect! :D I heard the K1000s have tight, clean but also loud bass when driven properly. Too bad there's no place in NC to try out high end headphones. :(
 
Fair enough, not every product is for every person. I haven't heard either, so I have no idea what they might sound like =]

but seriously, thats what they will say at head-fi... I've heard the 4040's myself and rather liked them, but I have heard others complain about the bass. Usually the response is get Omega II's as they have a better low end.

They are a little bit more expensive though :eek:

...especially when you start getting into custom made electrostatic tube amps. :rolleyes:

EDIT: even though I'm making fun a bit here... it is my dream system :D

Replace the stock amp with a Blue Hawaii and you have my dream system..... only cause the Orpheus cans (even the Baby o's) are next to impossible to find for a reasonable price. :(
In the mean time I will have to settle for some HD650s and a PPA.

Have you heard the HE90's or HE60's? Do they sound better than the Stax?

The 60's and the 90's with their stock amps and the Stax with it's stock amp and I favored the Sennheisers cause they had slightly better balance. But you know how auditions go, 5 minutes is hardly enough time to form a good opinion on something.

I know, the boards are amazing looking... I am not at the level where I can populate them yet :eek: [ie. level zero :p ]

But when I do eventually get around to it - after doing some other projects first - I think I will get a found-item type caseing solution.. like an old radio from a flea market or something ;)

Also, anyone know anything about this model of sony phones SON MDRV600? A friend of mine is upgrading and would sell them to me for a good price.

There are no decent wireless headphones under $100, IMHO. Also, that Sony MDR-V600 is downright awful, at any price.
 
pretty much all wireless headphones are bad... out of curiosity, why wireless?

oh and eagle is right about the sony's... stay away from those... there is a reason your friend is upgrading :D

Well Im looking for 2 sets. Upstairs is for a den so a cord isn't a big deal but downstairs is running smack dab across the middle of the 15ft living room, lengthwise. I figured that wireless were crap but thought if there was something close it might be worth the conveneince of not having to trip on a cord.
 
I think anyone that uses cans echoes the sentiment about the cord.
Till you try wireless cans..... then you get over it.
I have got to the point now that I don't even notice the cord anymore.
Well, Cept for when I trip over it. :D
 
Ya, I bought my wife a pair of Sony cordless before I knew any better. You could stick your head on the base and it still pop, cracked and shrieked static in your ear. It was enough to cure me.

The cord never bothers me until the cat comes for a visit in which case it becomes an unoffered toy and a problem. On the other hand the wife does aerobics with her SR-125s so I got her a 20 foot extension. Looks like a whip when not in use. :eek:
