Hey,
I was looking around and wondering if my audio card in my mobo could handle some akg 701 or some HD650's. The audio inputs on the new mobo i have ( in my sig ) have optical out and some other nice inputs, but i know NOTHING about this kind off stuff. Will i need a pre-amp or something else? Also will either of those work fine with a ipod? Thank you for your input!

You won't need it, but why would you drive HD650s without an amp and with onboard sound as a source? That's just wasting money on some very well-respected headphones. If you want the entire package, you should get the headphones first, but plan on upgrading the rest of the chain later.

Everything will work, mind you, but if that's all you're looking for, cheaper headphones would work as well. :)

yah for it to work out of onboard sound u need some 32 ohm headphones. sennheiser 555s, 595s (50 ohm but it's ok) audio technica A500s, 700s, 900s.

If you have like $500 to spend and want a complete package lmk b/c then it get's kinda complicated.

get the hd595's you'll save some money and they'll run just fine unamped. I'm listening to a pair right now out my x-fi xtreme music and they sound amazing
