Headphone amp

I've made both the cmoy and the mint. If you have the soldering skills and an extra 30 bucks, I would, no holds barred, recommend the MINT. It's portable, sounds great, and only takes a couple hours to put together.
 
You'd probably be better off spending the money on a new set of headphones. The V-600s are widely regarded as pretty terrible headphones, and I doubt an amp would make them much better.
 
look ill just say this... people need to stop saying "those suck" or theres better things for the money... I got these for $52 when they are MSRP $149.99... I sold headphones at the time and listened to the triports (i own a pair of them and they suck but are great for light wieght while i work out) and I listened to 5 pairs of senhieser... look at the effeciancy and response curve... look at the dynamic range and power handling RMS... sennhiesers dont hold a candle to this. There are just one to many people that dont understand flat response makes better sound. if you want your headphones to pound so hard they give you a headache great... but thats not clean sound. sennhieser clip at a much lower power level and spl then the sonys... now that i got that out of my system I really would like to have something ac powered... althought i would bet i should just use a dc transformer and wire it up myself

I think that settles the whole "stop saying" thing in short order. ;)

well all I'm gonna say is I just hooked my sister up w/ a ad8620 based cmoy and some mdr-v700 and for what the cans can do it sounded pretty good as far as matching goes. myself, I can't even stand the v700's since I picked up the dt880's, but thats a whole new bucket of worms.

So yeah my vote is build a nice cmoy for arounf $50-60 including batteries and you should be happy so long as you already like the v600's.

Price is no indication in the audio world. KSC-35 for $30 sounds better then many crap phones sold for $100+ that are marketed as Super Digital DJ Studio Monitors.

Which Senns have you heard? Efficiency does not matter if you can afford an amp. Dynamic range? What does that mean? I can pump 10 volts into my cans and achieve insane dynamic range. Power handling RMS? More marketing BS?

Headphones should NOT have "flat" frequency responses. Only your sources and amps should. The sound reproduced goes through your ear canal, through air. EQ your cans to a measured flat frequency response, listen to them and then have a good laugh at your arguement.

If you wanted headphones that pound hard with bloated mid-bass, you have the exact pair I would recommend for that sound signature. Hardly clean sound compared to some decent headphones.

Improperly driven, yes they clip. Anything clips when you don't have the right source and amplification.

Now that I got that out of my system, sorry for sounding so caustic. Please do yourself a favor and listen to some properly amped decent Senns, Grados, AKGs, Etys, Shures, or some decent Sonys.

I pretty much agree with these points. However detail is not something that is measured on headphones or speakres and it also matters as much as how flat your frequency resposne is.

Also keep in mind the flatter it is, the more flaws it will reveal in your recordings. This is why many folks prefer a less than flat but more detailed speaker or headphone. It pretty much sucks when you find out how crappy the final mastering job was on your favorite band's last album :(

Indeed. It's for this reason that I've deleted some albumns off my workstation at work. They are simply too fugly to listen to. T Bone Burnett always does good work, however. David Briggs also has done absolutely stellar work with Neil young on creating that "grunge" sound.
 
Hmm... ok so we just throw out all industry standard specs because you like senn? I dont think so... Look at the number, ears are subjective, numbers are objective..... And you my friend are offensive. Lets just get down to it, we all have a right to diffrent taste, if the v600s sucked and no one liked them they wouldnt sell them... If the senns didnt have thier good quality no one would buy them and theyd be out of bussiness. The v600 design hasnt changed since 1995 and sony has sold an insane number... therefore somone is buying them. Now Ill get down to it and sum it up. I will respect you opinion if you respect mine.
 
Let me also note subjectivly... In soft listening which I rarely do the sennhiesers do sound better. I just find the dynamic range seems to shorten drasticly as the high spl levels are reached. The sonys are very uniform across its spl range. I really perfer good sound at moderate loud (not deafening) spl....
 
ok and back onto the topic at hand, w/ those cans the best thing they could possibly see any benefit from imo (and I've owned v700, v900 cans b4) is a good pimeta, I wouldn't bother investing in anything higher end than that.

To note though, I've found the reason the mrd-v### line has sold so many is due to the fact that they have somehow become the normal dj standard. I mean thats the only reason I first got mine. Virtually 7 in 10 dj's I knew owned one of the 2 and almost every club/event I have ever spun at had those, a djm500, and some tech 1200's. There popularity I feel is not due to there sound and I really find no current use for the 900's other than taking them with me to gigs and not minding that they may get a little thrashed up.
 
Maybe he's talking about the MDR-V6s? I hear they're significantly better than the other Sonys in the line...
