Hi all,

I'm looking at several types of headphones for a possible gift, but I'm not sure which require the use of an amp. I'm looking at the HD485s, HD555s, HD595s. Do any of these require you to use an amp? I'm aware that the use of an amp may give you better sound, but do any of these require an amp just to function? (these will be used for computer use, either plugged into a X-Fi or just onboard audio) Thanks in advance.

Yep, you prob wont need a amp with any headphone below 60ohm. With a few exceptions i belive...some REALLY high end cans are lower impedance. I think i remember hearing that the Sony R-10s are 40 ohm, but still require a amp to run to best.

However out of those 3, 485-555-595, you will not need a amp...it will help with the 555s and 595s, but no way needed.

No, none require an amp.

It appears to me that you are confusing sensitivity with Impedance. ;)
