well im thinking about getting a new pair of nice head phones most likely a pair of sennheisers not sure which model yet

looking at the HD-280 Pro's right now

now on to the question
do you really need an amp if you dont blast the music ??

i would say on a scale of 1-10 i probly listen to music on a 3.5 - 5 level .. i dont really blast my music so i was wondering if an amp would be a waste of cash

i listen to all types of music and enjoy good sound quality just not reallly loud

Amps don't just make the muzic louder they also add equalization, balance, and stereo separation.
Not to mention a lower noise floor.
 
Don't they also help the headphones reproduce bass freqs with better "juice" reserves? Sorry about all the technical talk. :rolleyes:
 
Yes, they have the reserves in larger and better caps then you would find in a standard source. They can supply current peaks without clipping, unlike weak sources.
 
My understanding is that headphone amplifiers just add impedence matching. With impedence matching comes more linear frequency response for more balanced sound levels, distortion reduction, elimination of reflections from an impedence mismatch, and generally clearer, more natural sound.
