The headline of the day involves a quantum physics discussion between two homeless men that ends in a skateboard attack. Even better, the defendant is expected to take the stand during the trial.

A homeless man is on trial in San Mateo County on charges that he smacked a fellow transient in the face with a skateboard as the victim was engaged in a conversation about quantum physics, authorities said today.

what the article fails to mention is that "homeless" and "transient" are used interchangeably with "graduate student."
 
I don't know if that's cool or not. If they are smart enough to discuss quantum physics, why are they homeless? Doesn't say much for US economy, if quantum physicists are unemployed and homeless... :)

Still, a skateboard to the face to defend your position. I can see why he was let go from his job! :D

That reminds me of years ago when I seen a man on the street corner holding a sign that said " Homeless doctor. will work for food." Made me wonder what exactly he did that made him homeless.
 
I can already see an episode of next season's Big Bang Theory taking from this crazy story :D

Well knowing a bit about quantum physics doesn't necessarily make you a quantum physicist. Could be that there really are a finite number of jobs available and some people are just unwilling to bend.

Or it could be they simply picked up a book and physics really is a lot easier than it seems when you have plenty of time on your hands...

Or it could be they weren't talking about physics at all, and that's just what was reported (sounds cooler :D)

well thats a pretty ignorant thing to say. haven't you seen "the soloist"? some of the smartest people I've ever had the pleasure of speaking to were homeless, in and around harvard university. and no, they weren't matt damon :)
 
Having a PhD doesn't mean you can't lose your job, have your wife leave you, and end up suffering from depression. Then end up living under a bridge.

One of my 3 options had to do with it not even being about physics and that makes me ignorant? Alrighty then... and no much like most of America, I have not seen the Soloist.

no, well, there is that I guess, but not as much as you think. Most of them are just a little crazy, too smart, or have some associated instabilities (scizho I've seen with a BUNCH of the smartest ones, like they'll either tell me about it or one day they just spout the most amazingly bat crazy ear porn).
 
Maybe the attacker was trying to split an atom cheaply...
