Is it possible to overclock a 7970 without attaching a monitor or dummy plug? I'd like to run this headless but still overclock.

I have a bunch in my basement... Why would this be a problem? for your first install you should plug in the keyboard, video and mouse but after you're up just set the BIOS to auto power back on with failure and just remote in using like tight or whatever your favorite one is.

The other option is a custom windows install disk that handles all of your switches or something like BAMT or other linux based USB sticks and just set it to boot to USB and go

Answer is that it depends. I'm running W7 to fold with current-ish drivers, 13.9, and it requires a dummy plug to OC and fold. YMMV depending on drivers, OS and application you want to run. Test and let us know your results and environment.

One trick is to use VNC such as tightVNC to access the system, Windows Remote Desktop messes with GPU drivers while VNC has no effect. Teamviewer is great for remote access over the internet, I don't know if it works well for folding.

Another trick is to right click on the desktop to change screen resolution and then click 'Detect'. This will give you one 'display not detected' box for each of your GPUs. Tell the GPU to output video even though it doesn't detect a monitor and it will be the same as if you had a VGA monitor plugged into each one.

Over the last 2.5 years this system has worked for multiple headless HD 5k, 6k or 7k cards on Windows 7 with no special attention payed to drivers.

Agreed, RDP breaks GPU folding. I use logmein.

Interesting. As stated, I have a dummy plug on one GPU and both GPUs (7970s) in the box work. I went in via logmein and tried clicking detect, but to no avail. Wonder if the dummy plug is messing with your technique. I'll stop folding, pull the plug and try again to see what happens.

EDIT: Removed dummy plug and rebooted. Went in via logmein, still showed a display on 1. Clicked detect, got the "display not detect" for 2, then changed drop down to force it on. Restarted FAH and success. Every day's a school day. Thanks Zink.

Yes. I run a few boxes totally headless.
