I know someday when I have the spare cash to throw at a real set of cans I'll kick ye ole X86 for a good handmade amp....
 
If you have a receiver and some talent your set. Get a mini box from Radio Snatch and a ¼ headphone jack. Solder a pair of 100 watt 100 ohm resistors (wire wound resistors are best for this) across each channel’s positive and negative. Run speaker wire from the jack to your speaker out on your receiver. Bingo, affordable headphone amp.

The alternative is type headphone+amp into google and be prepared to spend from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars.

I have an old Nagra I’m sort of fond of :D

I read about making your own amps but I didn't know it was done a lot. I think i want to do it the [H] way and save some money while im at it.

anyone have some good links and/or tips on how to make one? I've never done any real soldering like this so treat me like a totaly newb :cool:

I've done the soldering for a CMOY (had one dumb wiring problem, thanks Mister X). Thats what most people reccomend for beginners, check that one out.

After reading the article (mainly the inventory needed for this project, haven't gotten to assembly yet), and being a newb, I'm not quite understanding. I'm on a tight budget and would like this more to be a learning experience and I dont need it top end as of yet.
Anyways, here is what I am confused about. This one is for the $20-25 budget:

You won't be able to make it at $20 using that. Everything is there, but the resistors are a bit extra because of the minimum purchase at digikey, you can probably get a grab bag instead from radioshack and match them yourself.
 
Ok I'm still confused.

On the $20 link, it has resisters in it also, why would I need to get more?

damn so its gonna run me a little more, i have most of the tools already. I just want to know the exact parts i need for the amp excluding the tools

Just read the page. Tangent went to the trouble of writing it. If you want to answer your questions, then you should read it.
 
Read, read a lot of this headphone amp stuff. Check out www.head-fi.org, www.headwize.com, and tangent's pages which you've already been using. Browse around those and just read up on the basic amps, schematics, and workings. You'll gradually start learning, I promise.

It worked for me! :) I also had great help from Mister X (thanks again), forum members here, and at head-fi. Just read up on the stuff and you'll start learning.

ive got my headphones hooked up to my dads old 480W Pioneer stereo amp, through one of 3.5mm Female to 1/4" Male Adaptors (it does the job)
would it sound better going through the the speaker outs?

Most likely the amp has the same setup inside of it. This is exactly how most cheap amps incorporate a headphone out ... and it is also why the headphone out on many amps/recivers suck.
BTW This solution is commonly referred to as an impeder. ;)

That's pretty cool X. So does it just the input level just measure how much/the amplitue of the left or right channel and output it in a bar graph (via leds) format? Did you design the circuit yourself?

And I might as well ask now, ask I'll end up asking later; what case is that? PAr-metals right? What model number? Thanks again!

Yea pretty much.

Nope, it's pretty much a standard LM3915 implemenataion.
There are a few new tweaks that I (with a suggestion from Tangent )added but they were just to make it play nice with the PPA. ;)

And yeas that is a Par-Metal's 20 series case.
I forget the exact part number.... I will have to look it up. :)

What is the status on your amps BTW?
