You may have seen my other thread about routers. My girlfriend and I are getting a new apartment, and we're getting Time Warner's Digital Cable package with HD DVR, so it's time for me to go HD.

So far Sony's 32" Bravia (32XBR6) is in the lead. I can't afford bigger than 32", 'cause I know you get what you pay for. I shouldn't even drop this kind of cash on a TV (and stand, cables, speakers), but...you know. :D

What else should I consider? Please post your experience if you have the Sony. I have no intentions of using this as a computer monitor, although that's probably what it'll become someday when I get a bigger TV.
 
Oh yeah. You also have to beat B&H Photo's price on the Sony of $1079 shipped.

The Panasonic is cheaper, so that's a plus. Newegg also carries it. Another plus.
 
Look into Panasonic's 32" LCDs and the 37LZ85 can sometimes be found for a good price.
 
Why would the 37LZ85 be about the same price as the 32LZ800?

Wow, very enticing! The TC-37LZ85 is $950 shipped at Newegg.
 
The the 800 series has some features I can't recall off the top of my head that the 8x series are missing. Not really necessary imo. I chose the 32 incher because I would be primarity using it as monitor. I'm sure the 37LZ8five (my five key is broken atm) would suit your needs.

I vouch for the excellent panel. I can't stop admiring how good the IPS-alpha looks.. :)

edit: I just looked it up the 8x is no glossy while 800 is glossy.. might have some more differences.
 
I don't like glossy computer monitors. Not sure if that translates to TVs. My dad's isn't glossy and I really like it (Sony X40BR1).
 
Well, my girlfriend and I went to Best Buy. We admitted to liking the glossy bezels. They make the matte finishes look plain.
 
After seeing the TVs at Best Buy, we've decided on a 37". The 32" TVs are a bit too small. So right now I'm set on a Panasonic 37LZ85 because it seems like a great value between size and price. If you know of any other 37" sets comparable in price and quality, please let me know. I'll be purchasing within the next week or so.

Also, I'll likely buy it from Newegg since it's $949 shipped. I'm also getting a D-Link DIR-655, so why not throw in some HDMI cables? Anyone ever used Link Depot's HDMI cable? I've read multiple times that cheap HDMI cables are as good as expensive ones. Anyone with first-hand experience?
 
Can't afford the Sony 37XBR6, but does anyone know if the Sharp AQUOS LC37D64U is good? It's $100-150 more than the 37LZ85.
 
There are way too many TVs. This is harder than choosing a motherboard.

What about Samsung's LNT4061F (or its other 40" models)?

The LNT4061F has digital audio out, lots of ports, 3 HDMI, etc. Seems like a steal for the price.

I like glossy bezels on TVs, but I'm not sure about glossy screens.
 
avsforum stated that the Samsung LNxxA650 is best for watching movies, dvd's, Blu-Ray and decent for gaming...the Toshiba xxRV530U's are best for gaming but decent for movies, TV's and etc. The A550's are 60Hz at 8 bit panel vs the A650 at 120Hz, AMP at 10 bit panel. The Toshiba is a bit cheaper and is also 60Hz at 8 bit panel.
 
Agreed GJSNeptune there are too many TVs to choose from. I've heard good things about the PANASONIC TH-42PX80U. Saw it for around $800 - $950 with free shipping (Sear's, Abes of Maine, B&H). You might want to check it out. My father-in-law a Sharp AQUOS (can't remember the model, but it's a 42") that's awesome - I was very impressed. I'll probably spring for the AQUOS when I buy.
 
My dad has a Sony V40XBR1. I love it. It looks better than any plasma TV I've seen in person. It's a few years old though.

I really can't decide. It's impossible. Best Buy has a decent amount of TVs on display, but the real test is in your family room.
 
I'm probably going with the Samsung LNT-4065F. Best Buy doesn't carry it yet, so I can't go in and try to haggle and make them throw in a good surge protector. Then there's sales tax. Amazon has it for $1,149 through Vanns with free shipping. Hope it comes undamaged and without dead pixels.
 
Actually, Best Buy has the updated version, the LN40A550 for $1,159.99. Not bad, but with sales tax it'll be $1,239. Think I could haggle it down a bit?

Don't buy it from Best Buy's...buy it from Amazon.com for $1090 out the door.
 
I know. I hate buying from Best Buy, but if I buy it at a B&M, I could have them power it on so I can inspect it.

Amazon doesn't have the LN40A550 in stock, but what is their dead pixel policy?
 
Says in stock to me. They have a 90 day policy...they will unpack it, put it on the stand, turn it on, make sure the sound and picture is on...you can inspect it and they leave...if you have any problem...they will send you a new LCD and once it arrives...they will do the same unpacking and repacking the old one...you won't be out of a TV when they do it like this. You will have to check out avsforum.com and ask them. Me personally...I still can't decide on 120Hz, 10 bit panel w/ glossy screen (A650) or the 60Hz, 8 bit panel w/ matte screen (A550)...and another consideration for me is the Toshiba RV530's...since I'm using it for console gaming more opposed to PQ...
 
The updated model has higher contrast ratio (30,000:1 vs. 15,000:1) and faster response time (5ms vs. 8ms). Neither are 120Hz. Very strange. The LN40A550 is about the most I want to spend, 'cause I still have to get a TV stand, cables, surge protection, etc.
