HDTV n00b question...

that's one. there's also one called myhd and there may be others.

whether you can actually pick up a good signal depends on where you are relative to the broadcast towers. that's of course assuming you have any station broadcasting hdtv in your area.

there are other options, such as cable and satellite set top boxes. if available, that may be a more reliable way to get hdtv. of course you also need to sub to the service.

HD broadcasts are still just Radio waves.

The only difference is that its broadcasting 1s and 0s instead of the analog signal for SDTV.

So why does relation to the antenna or line of sight matter? Hardly have line of sight on SDTV antenna signals.

Thankyou. Told you I was a n00b. :p

I'd like to try this out with an antenna but I need a good antenna. Any recommendations? I'm thinking of going w/the ATI HDTV wonder because I can get it @ the local BestBuy and return it easily if it doesn't work well.

One more question... Does the 2405FPW have inputs that will work for this? Or does the ATI HDTV wonder pipe the output through my PC and hence the DVI out and then into the monitor?

I thought about this problem when I bought the Dell 2405. I ended up getting HD from Comcast....an extra $6.95 a month...they give you a box and all the cables (I used component) necessary for a hook up. I then ran an optical line to my Logitech z-5500's for sound and as it turns out it's a sweet set up! Basically you get a tuner....antenna from the cable line.....and crystal clear picture. Just a thought you may want to consider if you have the options.

I don't have cable and really don't want to order that. I'm just doing this to get FOX and my local stations in HDTV format. It's a one-time $99 expense plus antenna this way. So I'm still thinking I'll need a good antenna though. Any suggestions?

check out this card, its the most popular amongst the hdtv fanatics.
http://www.digitalconnection.com/Products/Video/mdp130.asp

search the net & you will find the ati hdtv card is not up to the quality/reliability of others.

look here for lots of info:

also check here:

as soon as the 2405 comes back down to around $900 after shipping & taxes i plan on getting it & the MDP-130 card myself.

btw you are gonna get the best possible signal quality/bandwith from OTA HDTV signals,
just because cable companies can't send out a full bandwith signal for all the channels. that's one reason i will be dumping my cable (they also don't carry 4 of the HD stations in my area!) once the 2405 arrives. good luck.

Thanks, but what is OTA? And yeah it looks like the MDP-130 is much more popular than the ATI option.
