HDTV interlacing problem

I’m having a problem with my new HTPC (see sig). Using fresh install of Windows XP Pro SP2. Latest Nvidia graphics driver (91.47), Dvico driver (3.47) and Hauppauge driver (22_23257). I also have the latest version of Nvidia Purevideo.

I am using Beyond TV 4.4 and am having interlacing problems.

Here’s my BTV Playback Settings:

Video: Nvidia
Audio: Snapstream Audio
Renderer: Overlay
Deinterlacing: Hardware (I've also tried None)

And my PureVideo settings:

(Under the Video tab)
Display Type: Content Default
Hardware acceleration: Checked
De-interlace Control: Smart
De-interlace Mode: Best available
TV Overscan Correction: 0
Enhanced nView support: Prefer Overlay
(Under the Color tab)
Color Scheme: Default

I have not changed any settings in the Nvidia Control Panel. This interlacing only occurs on HD channels. The rest of my HD and SD channels are fine.

I’ve tried the 81.98 and 84.21 drivers. These fix the interlacing though the video is fairly choppy. Definitely not as smooth as the latest driver. I also tried 91.31 which had the same results as 91.47 (smooth, yet interlaced, video).

My CPU utilization is around 70-90% while watching HDTV. Could this be a source of the problem (A64 3500)?

Here’s a shot of the interlacing problem:

The image is perfect with no movement (see the right arm) but any movement at all (such as Manning's hand) results in really distorted interlacing.

I played the same video on another networked PC (w/ the same PureVideo settings – see sig) and it played back fine.

How can I get this to play back smoothly?

The 6150 doesn't support spatial-temporal deinterlacing for HD content. It does for SD content.

http://www.nvidia.com/page/purevideo_support.html

So that might explain why interlaced SD looks fine, but the interlaced HD doesn't. I'm actually quite surprised, even my old 6800GT can do spatial-temporal deinterlacing for HD content.

It's possible that older drivers had this enabled on the 6150, but they found that it wasn't fast enough, so they disabled it in newer drivers. Could explain why it looks good but choppy with old drivers, and looks crappy but smooth with new drivers.

I wish I could find some comparison pictures somewhere online of the deinterlacing types, just to make sure this is the problem. But that looks pretty similar to what I saw when I was messing with the deinterlacing types in ffdshow. Using the simple bob/weave modes looked almost exactly like your picture above.

Upon further inspection I found that this only occurs with 1080i; 720p is not choppy at all.

I tried raising the onboard video memory from 64MB to 128MB but that just made the video even choppier.

My CPU utilization is around 70-80% while watching HD.

So is there no way to get smooth 1080i with the 6150?

if ur still using the same display in ur sig which is a lcd you should use 720p instead of 1080i why are you using 1080i

The video he's receiving with his HD OTA card is in 1080i. Not like he has a choice in the matter. Doesn't have anything to do with his output display settings.

ryan, I guess you could always try a couple different MPEG2 decoders, to see if they look any better? Maybe the Cyberlink or Nero ones? They might have a free trial you could try for a couple days.

Are you running a dual channel ram setup?

you should look into getting a 7300GT. Does anyone know if that card supports the Interlacing mode he needs?

Yeah, every card except for the 6600LE and lower support it.

I did see there's a new beta driver today, might be worth a shot:

It's even called the "PureVideo HD" beta driver, so maybe they've got some HD decoding updates?
