I have a friend who has the LG 47LH55 which is a 47" LCD 1080p 240Hz set. It's super nice, like it very much, enough so to get one of my own possibly.

But how does it compare against the LED variant which is newer? The LG 47LH90

I'm wondering if anyone has enough concrete facts about the new LED LCD's and what the drawbacks are if any compared to the older models?

Also taking suggestions on other makes and models.

Thanks

When you're a tech nut, like most of us are, you def need to research your TV's beforehand before buying. There's so many things to look out for it would make your head spin trying to keep track of them all.

Personally i would do a forum specific search at AVS on the models you're interested in, and find out what the owners have to say.

I know many of the LG models get great press, but not all of them, so try to verify beforehand. I also recommend extended warranties, but if the store is charging too much for them, then head over to your local Mack warranty dealer within 30 days of purchase to get one yourself.

I have the 55LH90. Black levels are FAR superior due to the local dimming. Colors are great. Really is an amazing looking set, especially for the price.

Major downside is off-angle viewing. There is minor haloing straight on for pure white text on a pure black background, but at off-angles the issue worsens dramatically (things look grayish, etc). It is perfectly fine for a couch facing the TV, but if you have a seating setup where people are >45 degrees off to the side, it can be irritating during dark scenes.

Both are matte screens which was important to me due to the lighting in my room.

yeah, i read up a bit on AVS forums, seems both are very nice and both get very good reviews, i am just slightly worried about jumping on the newer LED zone lighting thing...seems as if one (or more) of those LED's might go out after a short couple years causing a problem, the 47LH55 which uses traditional fluorescent is looking like the better deal, $1100 at BestBuy vs. $1700 on the 47LH90, from what i have read there doesn't seem to be $600 worth of increased benefits and the chance that two years from now i could have LED's failing is concerning, since they are so new nobody really knows what the life cycle of them are i take it...

its funny though, i bought a RP 1080i HDTV back when they were stopping production and LCD was the very newest thing, PQ was actually much much better on my RP than the new LCD's at that time, and i paid $1100 for it like 5 years ago roughly, its been great, but i think it is going to the basement, along with some new exercise equipment and a Wii + Fit board, will make a nice room to get "active" in

Just about every LED I've seen is rated for 50,000+ hours, which is 5.7 years if on 24/7 so I wouldn't worry too much about the LED's themselves.

im more worried about that one or two led's out of 3000+ that dont reach their intended lifespan.....

new angle..........

what about the 600HZ Plasmas?

been doing some googling....trying to determine if a 50" 600Hz Plasma for $900 might be more economical than a $1000 120Hz LCD or even a $1200 240Hz LCD?

Panasonic plasma image quality varies a bit from model to model. I may be wrong but i think their S1 plasmas may be on the lower end of their scale.

Here's a subjective comparison from a hobbyist/expert: http://hdtvbychadb.com/reviews.htm <-- both plasmas and LCD's are reviewed.

The best affordable plasmas are currently being made by Panasonic and Samsung, i forget but i think LG may have a competitive model as well (?). Pioneer is best but they are no longer in production, and the leftovers on the market are still fairly expensive.

They all benefit from calibration, including the S1. Some models need it more, others less.
