HDTach...does this seem right?

I just ran HDTach for my raptor because some programs start up slowly. BTW, i just reformatted today.

The one on the left is the raptor, and the one on the right is some old IDE drive i have laying around.

Does this seem right?
 
Doesn't look terrible, but its a little low. You might see a 5% increase by disabling NCQ.

what exactly does NCQ do? i know it stands for native control something or something like that.

Is it worth disabling it?

also, are those spikes on the graph supposed to be there?
 
Native Command Queueing It makes a small difference. There's no reason a home user should need to have it enabled. It could make an impact on a server with lots of connections though.

As for the spikes, try disabling any background processes and re-running the benchmark. If Steam was accessing the HD while you were measuring its performance you'd see a spike - also make sure Avast! isn't scanning in the background.
 
lol steam is running and avast is running...not virus scanning though.

how about these questions first:
  • did the person suggesting to turn off NCQ realize that the OP owns a WD740GD raptor, which does not have NCQ capability?
  • How do I take a screenshot of a single program (alt+PrintScrn)
  • How many times was HDTach run to see wether the result is consistent?
 
i was like wtf its not in bios lol...no wonder

i ran it 3 times and theyre pretty much the same.
 
can i jump on this thread?, i have a WD2500KS which is sata2 or 300mb/s but HDtach seems to be closer to 1.5 speeds. I tried putting a jumper in "OPT2" because i read OPT1 forces 1.5, but that didn't resolve anything. i've ran this several times as well.

I wouldn't worry about it. The burst speed in HD Tach is questionable at best and certainly won't bottle neck your 55MB/s spec.
