First off - I'm really happy with Dod:Source, its AWESOME..

However the HDR really bugs me, I like the brighter scenes and such.. but the STUPID BLOOM.... The Band of Brothers demo also gave the same feeling, all bloom..why is half of the effect is adding annoying bloom? (The lights in Dod are REALLY REALLY bright).

If I wanted bloom I could just go and play NFS2 or burnout revenge or something...

Anyway of getting one without the other?

I agree with the really really bright part. I had HDR on and went into a small room and shot a pistol a few times to test. First problem is the way the light reflects off the walls is off. Second problem is, unless my gun shot lightning bolts it would never be that bright.

If you walk around some of the maps its almost annoying how bright some walls are, not to mention how the light is "shined" on to walls. In one spot it looked like the light was painted on, because the way it was done did not make any sense.

I can understand if its my hardware, but I have seen photos with 7800GTXs and they look the same to me as mine does.

I know HDR is part of bloom - but, I'd prefer the 'make everything look brighter' option over - HDR full and bloom..

I mean its REALLY balanced color, its hard to do that with the videocard and monitor settings.. but I hate the bloom effect..

I can tell you've never seen a gun fired in person before.

Really? because I have, and for the most part it isn't bright at all. XM193 out of a shorty AR has a huge muzzle flash, but it isn't terribly bright, at least not in a dim room or the middle of the day. A mauser 98k has similar levels of muzzle flash depending on the load, and a 1911 definitely doesn't ahe a lot of muzzle flash unless you put some REAL slow burning powder in it. I'll also point out that lamps in sheds don't blot out the outside world with their dazzling brilliance. Nor does a white flag on a bright sunny day blind you like staring into a 100 watt bulb unless you look at it for a good long time... if then.

The bloom in most games is out of control. Short of being in the dark for a few hours and then being exposed to alot of light, stuff generally doesn't tend to bloom unless it is INSANELY bright.

Yeah - QFT -

its really out of control, when I go outside and look around I'm not being blinded by bloom unless I'm staring directly into the sun  . Thats about the only time you'd notice bloom.. Or through a tree looking at the sun, thats when you get a slight bloom effect.

personally I BLAME PRINCE OF PERSIA!!!

A Desert Eagle .50AE blooms almost that bad. The muzzle flash on those things is wicked huge.

These people raving about HDR obviously never go outside. It's just a stupid effect that eats up performance. Maybe they'll come out with an effect than makes everything all blurry for five minutes every time you look near the sun.

1. FPS Gamers will always bitch about games not following real enough physics/enviroment

2. If the physics/envirmoment make it harder for them to play (regardless of realism) they will bitch.

Therfore no mater what game designers do...people will bitch.

I love HDR.

It's realistic, and to me it's not the same as "full bloom" as has been used in games before, like Prince of persia, brothers in arms, etc (lol not band of brothers :p ).

The difference is that with full HDR, the area's are made bright for logical reasons, with bloom ......shit just "glows" un-naturally.

I think this whole thing is just a plan by a team of rogue etymologists to get the general population to start saying "bloom" again.

The dark side of HDR is a pathway to gaming that some consider to be.....un-naturall.......

I don't want to even begin to tell you how wrong you are. In short, I sleep above 5 guns.

Anyway, I have never shot a Desert Eagle so I can't speak of that. But all the shotguns/rifles/handguns/etc. I have fired or seen fired don't light up already bright rooms. It just doesn't happen.
I compare some of it to welding. Looking at someone welding with your bare eyes is how some of the HDR reacts in this game. Some of it looks good but the good vs bad equation tilts in the bad, in my opinon. That coupled with loss in preformance makes me keep it off.

Anyone have Dual 7800GTX's and keep it off?

Correction, the Desert Eagle doesn't "brightly bloom". The muzzle flash is larger than anything. After my last post, I thought on it more, and yeah, I'd say HDR is a little too bright. The technology is awesome. It just needs to be toned down somewhat in the games. There are parts of Farcry you can't even see at all with any form of HDR turned on because all you get is this bright white void, where there should be simple lighting.

You get the feeling all of these game developers are taking the betas of their games to some Italian guy in a bunker somewhere, who says, "Eh...it needs-a more bloom."

it's not realistic, MANY parts of the map bloom for for no logical reason. However, I do have to give it props for the bit where stepping into the light, the brightness ramps up and then becomes more normal, and stepping into the dark it's much darker for a second. Of course the switch happens too fast, but it is a cool change from what we have seen before.
