I just cobbled up a HTPC for my living room and in the process, trying this video with HDR enable in Windows 10 & Chrome:

At 1080p 60 fps and HDR enabled, it caused the GT 1030 usage to spike to 100% on some scenes and stutter. I already installed the latest driver from nVIDIA. No problems on my main PC with a GTX 1080 Ti and seems to play HDR just fine. If I disable HDR in Windows setting, no problem at all.

The rest of the specs are:
    i5 2500 - 8GB RAM - 250GB SSD - PCI-E x4 (x16 physical, x4 electrical).

So now my question is: Is it stuttering be cause the GT 1030 is not powerful enough for HDR videos? Or it is because the x4 PCI-E slot is not fast enough? This is a HP 6200 Pro SFF so there's no real x16 PCI-E. Should I upgrade the VGA to something like GTX 1050 Ti Low Profile?

I dunno, Youtube 8k playback is such a cluster, because the codec selected and whether acceleration actually works is dependent on the browser.

Try Firefox and Edge, and see if the same things happen?

And I don't know if a 2gb card would be running out of memroy trying to decode something that large. Does it work fine if you drop to 4k?

I can't see PCIe 2.0 4x slot being a problem for decode bandwidth, and it should support 8k 12-bit VP9 like the rest of Pascal.

I just took a look at that in 8K and it maxed out a Xeon 1620 fwiw. 4k no issues.

    But what video card?

My tests, all on Firefox. That video is VP9

GTX 960 2GB + i3 3225 (HTPC) = smooth at 4k HDR, unplayable at 8k (expected, card only supports up to 4k offload).
    GTX 1060 6GB + 4790k (game PC)= smooth at 8k, 5% CPU usage.

Your 1030 is not going to be memory-limited, as my 1060 only used 1.6GB, and it certainly wasn't holding back my GTX 960

The only difference then is your connection speed. in my case, both are PCIe 3.0 16x.

Is that x4 slot through the chipset, or is it through the processor lanes?

Also, is the GT 1030 a model with DDR4 or GDDR5? I would imagine that would affect playback acceleration

The 1030 does not support H.265 video acceleration.

    Yes, it does.

It's just not officially supported in Netflix 4k. Much like the GTX 1050 2GB card.

Just because a feature is castrated by Nvida for paid streaming services doesn't mean it's not there for free streaming like YouTube. Nvidia would just rather you not know about it, and buy something more powerful.

If anything could likely be a problem for the OP, it's that he bough a card with DDR4 instead o f GDDR5. The ASIC is probably bandwidth-intensive, and it's just not there on the DDR4 models.

Youtube 4k with HDR never worked properly for me either. I'm running a 4670k with a gtx 1080. 4K without hdr runs just fine.
I've downloaded some 4k hdr sample vids and they ran fine but youtube didn't like it.
Nvidia has updated their drivers a few times since I last tried it, so I'll give it another try soon to see if it's any better.

You care to prove your assertion?

    Code:
    NVDEC Support Matrix, GT 1030

    MPEG-1 MPEG-2 VC-1 VP8 VP9 H.264(AVCHD) H.265 (HEVC) 4:2:0
                                   8 bit 10 bit 12 bit 8 bit 10 bit 12 bit
YES YES YES NO YES YES YES YES YES YES YES

    https://developer.nvidia.com/video-encode-decode-gpu-support-matrix

The GT 1030 has the exact same NVDEC support matrix as the rest of the Pascal family. So if one can do it, they can all do it.

The only thing that is disabled on GT 1030 is NVENC, and that's o be expected. It has ALWAYS been disabled for the GT series of cards.

Stop posting about things of which you have zero knowledge.

Correct the 1030 doesn't have any of the encode pieces but all the decode pieces are there. I think a lot of it comes down is your browser using the GPU acceleration. A lot of people me included think that you need 4GB of RAM to do HDR right. That said if the software support is there it should work.

The 1030 in my HTPC has been a work horse and on HDR up the 4K just fine provided the application offloads the video correctly.

I've got a 1030 GT and a 1050ti and only the 1050ti will hatdware decode H.265 in Pot Player. Why would that be then in your opinion?

So because you've just decided not to troubleshoot this by TRYING ANY OTHER VIDEO PLAYER ON EARTH, the specifications page I quoted and linked form Nvidia's website must be wrong?

Sounds logical to me  Thank you kind sir for correcting us, and fixing the obviously broken Nvidia spec page.

Link me something proving this card doesn't work (besides your own pointless troubles), and I'll believe you.

There's dozens of forum posts on The Googles proving the GT 1030 works with h.265.

Try VLC before you start throwing stones about no support.

There's a reason you're on my ignore list Zoda, but I still have to correct your thickheaded posts.

You ALWAYS assume you know everything, and can't wait to share your opinion with everyone else. And then you assume we can read your damn mind, and make snotty remarks until you piss us off enough to bite onto your steaming pile of troll bait.

Hopefully after you stop arguing over this pointless shit, I can go back to enjoying my forum without you.

You could have started your post with "I cant get my GT 1030 working in Pot Player," and I could have helped you out JUST LIKE THE OP. But fuck no, you had to be superior, and I'm not going to help you.

I followed the first of your links and it lead me to a Google search, which lead me to here. forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=327293

It confirms what I said was correct about the 1030GT. It in fact does not support HW H.265 hardware decoding. I already knew this because I own the card and tried enabling it myself, only to find out that it lacks that feature. I see lots of folks here blow up when they are shown to be wrong and you are no exception.

I know you're going to ignore everything I'm about to post, but what the fuck, in for a penny.

SO I WILL MAKE IT SO FUCKING HUGE YOU CAN'T MISS IT. This is the end of that thread I linked earlier, after they resolved all the unknowns and realized that there was actualklly working hardware acceleration after all.

As long as you were not stupid and purchased the DDR4 version, it should work fine. The only problem here seems to be you, or some bug in that stupid player you insist on using.

I didn't ignore everything you just posted, therefore you are factually wrong yet again. If you weren't wrong about it then I wouldn't even know how to make such a specific response to your claim. Do you ever get anything right? Do you even have a 1030GT video card? Because I do, and with the same settings that I use with my 1050GT, H.265 HW acceleration does not work. The thread that you linked is specifically talking about using Kodi, which I do not have. I admit that I don't know much about Kodi, but from what I understand it is not free software right? I am trying to use Pot Player and VLC, nether of which will work to play H.265 4k video with my GT1030. I would normally ask you why you think that is, but the last time I asked you, you conveniently (for you) dodged the question so i'm not going to bother asking you the question again. To be honest, given your track record at this point i'm not sure I would even believe you if you did answer the question, so don't even bother. I'm saving up for a card that can decode H.265 for my HTPC already right now. I'm still reeling from the $600 I recently spend on socket 1155 motherboards. (it's a long story i'd rather not go into with you)

    Like I said, pointless.

You assume feature is broken because-it doesn't work in your SINGLE video player. Ever heard of a bug?

That's fine, two can play at this game.

Try ALL these players on your GT 1030, then get back to me if all of them fail like Pot Player.

    https://fossbytes.com/10-best-free-media-players-windows/

You can't claim a feature doesn't work if you haven't done the bare-minimum research into it yourself.

What you, chicken? You have no excuse to not do it, because they're all free.

Since when are VLC and Pot Player a single video player? They aren't, derp. Together they make a duo of video players. I apologize if English isn't your first language, but dang you can be really hard to communicate with sometimes because of your apparent mis-understanding of the language.
