Tried out an HDR merge for the first time, I think it turned out pretty well:

Canon 10-22 on a 20D, I didn't bring a tripod so I just hand-held and used +/-2 exposure bracketing.

Is that three shutter clicks? Or does the 20D just store the image 3 times?

Nice pic!

3 shutter clicks, but I had it on burst mode so it was just one press. I really should've used a tripod, the 100% crop shows the misalignment.

That's beautiful.

How far is it to the beach from where you were, out of curiosity (i.e. what's the scale)?

The cliff was maybe 50 feet up? This was with a 10-22 at 10mm, there were people surfing on the waves out of the frame.

Made with pride in the USA ;) I looked up the name of the place, it's called Lunada Bay, it's somewhere south of Torrance in Southern California.

What is HDR?

That picture is really beautiful.

:)

mwarps - HDR stands for High Dynamic Range

If you think about it, there isn't a camera you can buy that can take one picture that has all of the detail from the sky near the sun (where it is super bright) and all of the detail in the shadows on the other side of the beach. Pretty much every camera would either make the sky near the sun completely white/bright (and reveal detail on the far beach), or the shade on the far beach completely black/dark (and reveal detail near the sun).

By taking 3 pictures at different shutter speeds (here the camera did shutter speeds of +/- 2EV along with the normal speed for the amount of light), Photoshop can build you a picture that combines detail from the different areas to make an image that (if done right) isn't too bright near the sun, and isn't too dark on the far beach. You just have to hold still enough (or hope things such as waves move slow enough between the 3 pictures) so Photoshop can combine the images well.

BTW fugu, very nice photo composition and good use of HDR. Right now we're having 10 degree farenheit weather (-12 degree celcius), so pictures of warm sunsets are welcome :)

Great work! The 20D makes it sounds so easy! With +/- auto bracketing on burst shots, even I could try this. LOL j/k :D . I really need to pick up a similar caliber camera. My Canon point and shoot has gotten me far enuf

Do you have a 1280x1024 copy of that? I would love to have that as my backdrop...i can pm you my addy if you would be willing to let me have it...you can even put your name on it :D

Thats an amazing pic. I would love to have a higher res image to put as my background

Are there any tutorials about this? I would love to take my photography a bit further with this kind of stuff. Maybe you could write up a tutorial? You did such an amazing job, makes me want to go out and try!

Thanks for all the compliments. There are a lot of good tutorials out there already, here's one that has a lot of good information:

Dude....you have ignited a bon fire. I couldn't resist and I went out at 11:00 last night to find things to take pictures off and put into HDR.

I'm not real good yet, but here's a few I've done so far.

I'm so excited about the possibilities of this. I had to say thanks. Keep up the good work.

Lunchbox that is a nice shot of downtown, what town is that? Don't tell me its in the Rocky mountain region. It also doesn't seem like too much use of HDR though. It looks like more of a larger apperature.

I like the OP's shot as well. Amazing for just handheld. What does the original shot look like?

The town is called Anacortes. And yea, i couldn't figure out how to get the HDR effect very well in this photo, but i'm still learning and I'll hopefully figure out what I need to do at the scene AND at the computer to get a nice final product.
