HDR monitor

That's cool. Sounds expensive though. Having an extra panel of LEDs in the back going to make the cost sky rocket.

if you take a 20 f-stop range of photographs and merge them using photoshop or whatever.
you're regular LCD will display the HDR image no problem....

Sure you can tone map it and get a compressed looking flat image, but it won't look as real.
 
My thing is that they are just taking an lcd panel and putting LEDs behind it. How is that going to give you the different exposures at once?
 
It gives you a higher dynamic range.

The different exposures are just a way to capture a high dynamic range with equipment that normally isn't capable of capturing a high dynamic range, to show it you must be able to reproduce it in some way and thats why they need a special backlight.
