HDR just completely worthless atm?

SCCT demo came out with full support of Shader Model 3.0 and HDR. Now, with SM3.0 i do get a performance increase over 1.1, aswell as better image quality. No quirks there. With SM3.0 and everything else maxxed (parralax on, shadow res at high, etc) i get about 45 fps in the cave and inside with about 29 outside by first lightpost and and rocks. Enable HDR, Only HDR, and i get about 19 outside with about 32 inside. This is at 1280*1024 no/af. It gets much more pronounced with AF on. One is playable, the other simply isnt. I just have to wonder if its even viable atm? Am i just getting really poor performance?

Im perfactly happy with 30FPS in splintercell because its not really a competitive game I would play online. I prefer the 3.0 just because the image quality looks so much better with HDR IMO.

HDR is the Equivlent of 8xAA its a big Performance hit. Also PS3.0 wont give you better image quality.

^^ That is true PS 3.0 will give you better performance though. HDR is awesome in the pics that I have seen. IMO HDR is not useable. Kind of like when AA first appeared. The first generation of tech always have problems. Wait a year and then HDR will become a better feature.

Eh i seem to be able to see slight banding with 1.1 instead of 3.0, but i suppose it could just be me. I do get a performance boost though so that is good. Anyway bumping the res down to 1024*768 the lowest i ever saw with HDR was about 27, but still, performance drops QUICK.

Also, is there anyway to get rid of the floaty mouse? Mouse movements are delayed when looking around about half a second for me.

What is this SCCT?

I get the same problem with my mouse.

LOL this seems to be the era of uselessness... SLI is supposedly useless...HDR is useless....PS 3.0 is useless...even LCDs are useless...

Well my system runs Farcry at 1280x1024 with HDR enabled. It is playable and never drops below 27 or 28FPS.

For a single player game it seems to work ok. But it does seem to bring out more of the floaty mouse movements when the system is taxed that hard.

I wouldn't call HDR useless, I wouldn't call PS3.0 useless or LCD's useless. Now SLi, is useless for all except the 15 games it supports. :D

QFT. Just like then, todays cards don't have the horsepower to actually use the features they boast. It's like that every generation. They do put down the groundwork so game companies have something to work with.

It's really best to wait a year (maybe two?) and simply buy the latest cards of that generation then. They should have it debugged and streamlined by then.

You get that when your framerate starts dropping below 30fps. Lower your quality and it should be less pronounced. Usually, to get that kind of lag, i'd be at around 20fps or less.

For some reason, third person games like these doesn't do very well at frameskipping when the graphics becomes too much. Maybe it's because you don't get that kind of lag with a thumbstick anyway? PoP:WW was just a bit laggy with the mouse, but it wasn't noticeable at all when i switched to a joypad. Atleast it isn't as noticeable when you don't turn the camera so much like you would with a mouse.

PS3.0 will give you frame boosts of about 1.1 frames a second which is good considering it can run everything PS2.0 can. PS3.0 is the right step forward for games but I must say its not some massive leap. then agian a leap none the less.

I'm downloading the demo now, I'll have to check it out, sounds neat. Parallax Mapping you say? FINALLY

Huh? PS1.1 and PS3.0 were the only ones mentioned so far (so it would be assumed that's what you were talking about), and PS3.0 gives much better image quality than PS1.1. It sounds like you were trying to compare 3.0 and 2.0, in which case you should have said so.

Anyway, I was getting about 30fps at 1600x1200 with 4xAA and 8xAF earlier and I found the game very playable at that frame rate.

Ami I right in this kinda thinking? HDR=Hardware excelerated Bloom.

(lord knows we need more video HW dependent tasks. EQ is a FINE example.)

My 9800 ran Painkiller fine with bloom on. Must be a software method though.

I think it stands for "High Dynamic Range lighting". I'm not 100% sure on that. I don't know the technical details, but basically it makes lighting appear more lifelike. For example, if you were to go from a dark cave to a bright outdoors area, the screen would appear bright and washed out, making it hard for you to see. Eventually this would slowly die down and you'd be able to see. This is meant to simulate what it's like going from a dark area to a light area in real life.

HDR stands for High-Dynamic Range lighting. And for the record, Bloom is NOT HDR.

so we should wait for next generation cards to run HDR. Then when a new tech comes out that the next generation cards cant handle your going to say wait till the NEXT generation? with that idiology we will never buy a graphics card

This coming from someone with a TNT2 32MB ;) Funds are tight at the moment.

2 things:

1: Try to catch this early because I'm sure someone is going to question it, but Splinter Cell Chaos theory is going to have PS2 support as reported by the developers in earlier interviews. This is a just a demo.

2: If you really want to use HDR, why don't you just lower your resolution? No one says you have to use 1600x1200 to play a game people! Now I haven't tested this yet on my GT machine, but this isn't openexr HDR right? So you can turn on AA. Unlike Farcry, by lowering your resolution and turning on AA doesn't look bad. You don't have jaggies. Play it at 1024x768 with AA and it'll be just fine. You're putting too much enphases that it HAS to be at a really high res to look good

1024 with AA is not possible for me. 1280 with no AA is pretty much unplayable due to the sub 20fps at some points. 1024 does work however, and really doesnt look to bad.

Also, the floaty mouse thing still happens at 50+ fps if i turn lots of things down. The game just seems optimized for a pad and has lag.

I'll admit..I don't totally understand you

1024 with AA not possible for you (why?)
1280 with no AA unplayable
1024 does work (with no AA?) why no AA? Dont you have a GT?

I don't quiet understand the Floaty mouse thing

Yes, reading that it wasnt very clear.

HDR:

1024*768 with any form of AA is completely unplayable. Without AA it works ok.
1280*1024 with no AA is unplayable, let alone with AA.

Without HDR:

1024*768 16xaf 2xAA works ok.
1280*1024 is pretty much the smae.

Im just saying HDR is more of a hit then you seemed to think in your first post. My GT just cannot handle any AA or AF with HDR, its too much for it.

Don't mean to thread jack, but how does one turn on HDR in FarCry v 1.31? I've got a 6800 GT.

HDR is the use of a high dynamic range of colors to create more realistic effects.
Look at the "shine" on the glass. (was reading end of first page, lol)

Yeah, that's basically it. But if you think of it conservatively, it's basically saying that when you buy a new card, you should only expect the stuff that was introduced in the last generation to work good. Anti-Aliasing became practical with the GF4Ti, it became a non-issue with the GF5 (e.g. FX series). PixelShader2 came with the FX, it became a non-issue with a GF6 as well. If you want good HDR, you could either wait for a GF7 (More efficient HDR), or you could wait for the GF6950 (Brute forced HDR).

In short, buy a GF6 for guaranteed smooth running the features of FX cards and below. Think of the one's it's just introducing now as a bonus.

First off, In my opinion, After seeing this...I think openEXR HDR "sucks". Granted two different games (farcry being the only game with openexr right now) one on an island and one in the dark. But I think this HDR looks sooooo much better (probably the AA what is doing the 'edge' in my opinion). And with AA...thats a couple of +++s right there. As for completely worthless HDR right now as the thread started out, right now it's a big hit. Which is pretty disappointing, but wow it looks so cool. Keeping in mind this is a demo and the full version migth have all the bugs worked out, or a patch comes along later, but very cool to look at. The performance hit though for a real world experience...I dunno in this stage of the game (not the game game but in videocards and the software being run on)

Can't wait till the next gen of cards :) Hopefully they'll be another leap like the x800 and 6800s where
