is there support for HDR in HL2? I dont remember ever hearing about it or seeing anything about it in the cvars. You guys know anything about this? thanks for the input.

There was rumor of it, even a video of HL2 with HDR if i remember correctly. But nothing in the shipped version. Maybe they'll pull a Crytke and release a patch

HDR is used in a couple of spots -- buggy level, where you are in the tunnels, exit of tunnels.

Isn't as overbearingly fugly as farcry's :D

it's a different implementation. and you can change the levels of brightness in far cry you know

I like the HDR in HL2 myself. Its more sublte and natural than in FC. But I did like the cold rendering in FC, just not the radio active look of a model once they stepped out of the light (they seemed to continue glowing for a minute).

I think all the light sources in hl2 uses an hdr like rendering effect, per some comments by valve. I had thought the light sources in hl2, though not as interactive as I had hoped, was pretty damn good. They had a very realistic feel to them.

When I played all the way through HL2 I was amazed by the game by a whole. Not to taken back by the visuals except for the amazing textures. Playing CS:S now though, with the recent release of the new de_tides map, I must say its the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in a video game EVER. Just totally blows away everything truly amazing when you start on the CT side.

1. The Source engine does in fact support HDR.
2. There is no HDR to be found in HL2.

^ yeah.

the fact that many people mistake light bloom effects for HDR says that HDR isn't the most important feature to have in a game, and i bet it isn't a huge priority for valve.

I think your mistaken, HDR is enabled in HL2....A different implementation than FC but its in there.

If it's enabled then you can't tell. The colors are no richer than, say, Far Cry without hdr enabled.

Is it just FarCry's implementation of HDR that is incompatible with AA, or all forms of HDR? If all forms, then HL2 does not have it.

i believe so, although i think incompatible isn't the correct word. i just don't think todays hardware can handle using both inconjunction with each other

By reading between the lines at steampowered.com, the mods there seem to be saying that HDR support (and SM3.0 support) will come when the "ATI Levels" are released, and they will be released in conjunction with R520.

Though TBH, I'd be happy at this point if they could just fix the annoying stuttering in the SM2.0 version of the game.
