HDR and FSAA at the same time?

Can both ATI's new R520 and nvidia's 7800 series run HDR and FSAA at the same time? I remember hearing about a problem where they couldn't be used simultaneously, although I'm not sure if that was a hardware or software problem.

I know for a fact that ATI said there HDR can have aa enable. Nvidia doesnt seem to support aa while running HDR...DoD does run hdr with aa on my 7800gt.

for some reason, as far as i know, this is only a problem with farcry, since i can run 8xAA with HDR with my 7800 gtx.

i would be able to do it with farcry too, but it doesnt allow me

Alright, thanks a lot. I'm interested in buying a 7800 GT soon, which is why I asked.

There are basically two types of HDR.

'True' FP16 HDR (used in Far Cry), and 'Pretty close' integer HDR (used in Day of Defeat: Source, Half-Life 2: Lost Coast, TESIV:Oblivion etc).

ANYONE (well, pretty much - Radeon 9700 or GeForce 5900 and up) can do integer HDR, and anti-alias it, as well. Performance is always a question...but it's certainly doable.

Supposedly, anti-aliasing FP16 HDR was not possible - at least, that's what nVidia kept telling people. Because they couldn't do it. ATI is claiming that their X1800 cards (and X1K series *only* - not older cards) CAN anti-alias FP16 HDR. This has yet to be seen in action, since the only FP16 HDR game - Far Cry - is too stupid to even allow you to try to mix those settings.

Exact same scenario with FP16 HDR for the 6 series when originally released. The performance wasn't really worth the sacrifice, hopefully ATi doesn't see too much of a performance loss with this or we'll have to wait for next-gen :(

Taken from Hardocp's preview

"Well, the ATI Radeon X1000 series also supports a FP16 framebuffer, but that is not all. There is full support for 64-bit (FP16, Int16) HDR as well as 32-bit (Int10) HDR and custom formats are also supported like Int10+L16 for example. ATI even goes one step further and supports every method of anti-aliasing with this in use. That’s right -- multisampling, supersampling, their new Adaptive AA, Temporal AA, and CrossFire’s Super AA -- all of it works with HDR"

Odd, I thought the entire Geforce FX series shared the same features (all directx9), with the exception of performance.

Anyway, I'm surprised people didn't know HDR and AA was possible. Remember rthdribl? It's also in Nvidia's Luna demo.

Maybe I'm wrong but is rthdribl not using fp16? Just I ran the demo on my x850xt and I know it doesn't support it...

EDIT: Nevermind it still uses it with just poor performance due to the lack of hardware support from my card

Oh is that why, we havnt seen any benchmarks with AA and HDR enabled at the same time in Farcry? Ive been wondering why no one has tested this yet. The card almost has been out for a month, and yet to seet his in action.

the realtime high dynamic range demo does not use frambuffer blending

Hey I already linked that :p

it's important to read the first few paragraphs as well for some people here, since there seems to be a lot of confusion over what HDR is and what cards support what, i explain it on that page

It's in the next Farcry patch. There is a beta patch circeling, which only works @ 6xAA. People reporting ~30/35 fps @ 1600x1200, 6xAA/8xAF.
Looking at those numbers, it seems to me that 1280x1024/4xAA, or 1600x1200/2xAA must be playable.

We can add another game to the list of HDR doesn't work with AA list for the 7800s, In Age of Empires 3 (it's a The Way it's Meant to be Played game and HDR doesn't seem to work in this game on the X800 series), so it must be using FP blending) if you enable HDR; 1/2 the lines won't get antialiased. So FSAA is actually 1/2 working in this game, but if you look closely you'll actually notice that 1/2 the lines & edges don't get AA with shader quality on "Highest". In AOE 3 though the HDR makes a much bigger difference than in Far Cry IMO so I actually turn on HDR in AOE 3.
