Hdmi Video output on Mac Mini Server..

Have a mac mini server connected to an old dell monitor with a vga output only. Currently have a thunderbolt to vga adapter connecting the server to the monitor and it works. Want to use an hdmi to dvid adapter with a dvid to vga adapter on that to connect the two but I get the red blue green color message thing when i do. Help please?
