HDMI video issue

Recently built an I3 Home theater PC using an MSI motherboard. I am also using a USB IR reciever from an off brand Media Center remote from Amazon to use with my Harmony remote. The issue is that I dont get any video over HDMI when the USB IR reciever is plugged in, the screen stays black. However if I plug it in after windows loads it works fine, I can even reboot and it still loads windows fine. The screen will not show any video if I do a cold boot. If I hook the PC up to my desktop monitor with either the DVI or d-sub and the IR reciever plug in, it loads windows fine fome a cold boot. Any ideas? I have ordered another brand IR reciever to try.

Some boards have problems booting with some USB devices attached. You can try changing the USB settings in the BIOS (use Legacy or Compatible mode, for instance) and see if that helps. Does the board have USB3 plugs? If so, you could try using those instead.

Are you plugging the IR receiver into a front USB port or rear one? If you're plugging it into a front, try swapping that to a rear port and see if that works.

I have tried all the usb ports, front and rear. The odd part is that this issue only happens when I use HDMI. The computer loads windows fine if I use DVI or the D-sub. I have gone as far as reloading windwos 7 sp 1 and using genreric drivers and no windows updates. The same thing happens. I cant tell if this is a hardware or software issue. Also my case has USB3 ports on the front, but my motherboard only has 2.0. They connect by an adaptor.

Here is what happens when everything is working properly:

Power on
Beep (you can hear the hard drive loading windows)
Num Lock light is on
Num lock turns off
Resolution changes to 720P and there is video
Num lock turns back on

Heres what happens when I use HDMI:

Power on
Beep (you can hear the hard drive loading windows)
Num Lock light is on
Num lock turns off and stays off.
Screen is still blank
Hard drive goes silent

Somthing is keeping windows from loading.

Ok which exact MSI MoBo are you using? It sounds like there's some issue either with the BIOS or hardware causing this. Try updating to the latest BIOS first.

I've seen some odd pc->tv behavior. Try cycling through the inputs on the tv when doing a cold boot and land back on the appropriate HDMI.

Please make sure you have the latest drivers and BIOS from the below site:

If after updating the problem still occurs, then you may just have to use an adaptor to avoid it.

All the current drivers have been installed and the BIOS flashed to the current version. Still no luck. I am considering returning the motherboard and ordering a different one that is another brand/chipset. Also ordered a different IR receiver to try.
