HDMI, miniDP Adapters not working for notebook

I'm trying to connect a Thinkpad X1 to a Sceptre x20wc monitor. This model of thinkpad has both Mini Displayport and HDMI. I have tried buying both a monoprice "5106" mini-dp to dvi adapter, and a simple male hdmi to female dvi adapter. Neither have worked. For HDMI, some research revealed that the sceptre might not actually be HDCP compliant.

Should I be looking at an "active" adapter like this, and is this also an active adapter?
