Do you know if there's a lcd that support hdmi 1.3?
(needed for best quality with Blu-Ray)

Don't you know its backwards compatible, fully?! LOL...I love Sony sometimes. :D I wish I had some useful info for you, but I currently know of no 1.3 spec verified panels.

yes i know it's backward compatible... but from what i've seen at my friends work(he works at bestbuy) they hooked up a blu-ray player to a 1080p hdtv, and the maximum resolution it could display with a blu-ray movie was 1080i, because 1080p took too much bandwith(from what he told me...) is it bull?

Sounds like mis-config on his part (possibly). If he has an HDMI/HDCP capable display, and a standalone Blue-Ray player (not PS3), then i would say to check and make sure he is either using HDMI or DVI connection for the interface between the two. I know it sounds dumb, but I've learned to start at the beginning in cases like this. Also, if it is a standalone player, there may be options to change the output resolution on the player itself. In addition to this, not all HDMI cables are created equal. Get one from http://www.monoprice.com, and make sure. Also, are we sure that the TV is 1080P, and not 1080i/720P? Drop some more info for us, and we may get you an answer.

At any rate, the PS3 is reporting to be havign major issues with Blue-Ray playback on 1080P capable monitors at the native 1080P resolution, due to the HDMI 1.3 spec that they claim is backwards compatible...it obviously isn't.

HDMI 1.3 is supposed to be backwords compatible. however devices popping up in the market are proving otherwise.

It is not the spec and not the PS3. The problem is most older sets didn't actually support 1080p via HDMI.

I think the PS3 problem is it doesn't do 1080i. Interlacing is lame and should never have been in the a new HD standard in the first place.

It's just bull. Wow those BB guys even make stuff up for their friends.

The extra bandwidth in HDMI 1.3 is for better colours, lip syncing and uncompressed HD audio. It also supports higher resolutions also but since all older (1.0 / 1.1 / 1.2 / 1.2a) HDMI types support full 1080p@60Hz the only point I can see is if you want to increas the refresh rate of the resolution.

HDMI 1.3a has also added a few more fixes but nothing major.

Some new Sony LCD TVs support HDMI 1.3 but they do not benefit from higher refresh rates or better colours, the HD audio is pointless for the screen speakers and the lip syncing was never a huge problem on older HDMI connections anyway. So is there any point?.... Can you say 'Marketing Gimmick' =).

According to Wikipedia there is an Epson display (EMP-TW1000) that supports 30-bit deep color with an HDMI 1.3 port.

Now weather the PS3 can actually output that colour is another thing, I've not heard of any media supporting higher bit-depth colour and I doubt any games will be able to afford the power required to process it either. They can't get anything decent looking to run at 1080p on the PS3. The HD audio is about the only thing that the PS3 could take advantage for but I see no benefit plugging that into a screen, only a reciever. Has anyone heard of any recievers supporting HDMI 1.3 yet?

Blu-ray doesn't support deep color so there is no benefit there, yet. There many current receivers that decode the full 7.1 PCM audio on Blu-ray now that aren't HDMI 1.3. Many of the high end receivers have started coming out with HDMI 1.3 now. You will probably see more at CES this month.

yeah, that's bull.

tell your friend to start reading the info Best Buy Corporate sends out every week. That's really pathetic...

p.s. I work at Best Buy too

Ahaha! Exactly...

I love approaching people in that store and helping them for that very reason. I would hate for them to be led down a path of complete BS all due in part by laziness.

is it also bull that, since there have been to much complain about hdcp, from customer who have older hdtv without hdcp(pretty much everyone..), hdcp will be remove from the market?
