Hey,

I've been having this issue where when I copy a hefty size (like 20GB) to one of my HDDs the drive stops responding. This causes a variety of issues because Windows's copying program is waiting for a device response but never gets it. So explorer chokes on itself for like 10 minutes not responding. Then, if I haven't reset it by now, Windows fc's explorer and starts it back up again. The drive still shows up under 'my computer' (though cannot be accessed) and the copying window is just stalled indefinitely. If I try to shut down after the event it won't as it's still waiting for the copy program to return - and it won't.

Anybody have suggestions as to what the culprit is? I thought one of my data drives was bad because it would always happen when i wrote to tyat drive with a large amount. I have been running with that drive unplugged though and it just pulled that crap with another drive..

Oh yeah, one more thing: sometimes the data drive failing issue causes windows to not want to boot (hangs at 'starting windows'). Typically is fixed when I kill the psu for like 20sec, but not always...this makes me think it's hardware. Sometimes it will keep windows from booting but recognize find in the BIOS. If it doesn't recognize in the BIOS then windows boots okay...just without it.

I'm thinking sata controller but am not entirely sure. Any advice is appreciated. TIA.
 
When you overclock did you also increase the pci speed? The sata controller is finicky with overclocks especially if you messed with the pci speed.

Try running your computer at stock speeds.
 
What format are your drives?

Might be a controller/driver issue, might need to reinstall windows, see if taht works?

You may not like this answer and I still appreciate your comment but the OC is not the issue, I can pretty much rule that out. It's been running 2 years flat with the same OC, haven't touched anything OC related in the BIOS since then.

I did not change the PCI speed, though.

NTFS. Yeah, reinstalling Windows would definitely be a possibility in case it's a driver issue...right now I'm not currently at a state where I can format easily (my computer's a cluster fuck as far as data goes atm). I guess that's the next step that I need to try to rule it out, as it is more typical that a SW change will fuck it up something like this than HW randomly breaking after 2+ years.

Guess I'll just have to get all the data together and back it up...then reformat (blahhh). Not much I can do I guess until I can rule out the OS, and my Linux partition(s) aren't in usable shape right now (so many OS's that just need a re-do from the ground-up)..

Keep in mind, you don't have to reformat a drive to reinstall Windows. I would suggest leaving the drive as is for now, and simply re-installing Windows on it. If that doesn't work, then you can go through the process of backing up your data and reformatting your drive.

Also, have you run comprehensive virus scans on your drives? Could be one of those nasty buggers messing with you.

means squat.
While I would guess that it's either the drive itself, if it's only the one drive having issues, it would not hurt to remove the OC just to verify.
I've read/seen plenty of threads where somebody's OC worked fine "for years" until one day it started causing issues.
