HDD Window Mod

Ive got to give props to the Hitachi rep that was at MML3 (lanwar.com). He had a window on his hard drive, with some circuitry wired up to make 2 different color LEDs fluctuate there colors and go back and forth. Not only did it look DAMN GOOD, but he said it had been working that way for 4 months.

Im assuming the company modded it for him so people will stop and be like Hitachi rocks! WOOO! But, either way, it was sweet as shit. Im going to try to find a pic of it, I think I took some.

i havent seen it done in the flesh (or metal as it where) but ive seen it online on a couple times though not with two difrent LEDs but that can all be done external, it would be nice though to be able to do it in an environment that it needs to be in, not doing it in a make shift clean room using pvc piping, and celofain, or the ever popular, turn on hot shower, come back in 5 min, turn off shut door, come back in 10 min for a "dust free" room

they are damn cool but hell i would never do it with a working drive

I was told by Maxtor reps at a Tech Xchange conference that they will be offering windowed drives from the factory! Expected around Nov/Dec time frame.

Just be pretend leet and hide your real harddrive in a bay and use an old crashed hard drive for the window. No one will ever know...

Here is my 40 gig fujitsu, it has been working like this 24/7 for at least 6 months now.
This mod was actually pretty ghetto, I used a CD jewel case for the window, and adhered, and sealed it with silver silicone.

Actually I made that drive out of two dead identical drives, so I only had to have the working drive open for ~10 - 20 seconds or so, and had all the time I needed to work on the other cover. I did the cover swap in the bathroom, without turning on the shower or anything, I just made it quick. I also made sure the inside of the cover was very clean.

I was a little worried at first about the whole thing, 1st, I used a CD jewel case for the window, and was worried about it melting, and warping, and such, then I tore up the gasket on accident, so I had to use the same silver silicone I used to adhere the window to the cover as a gasket between the cover and the drive. I am amazed that this drive still works actually.

well.. i ripped apart 2 dead hard drives last night.... a 1.2 gig WD and a 40 gig WD... i could probably mod the lid of the 1.2 gig and fit it on one of my several working 4 gig WD drives... and if i lose the drive.. it is a 4 gig... who cares...
