HDD Window Mod

That looks awesome, nice work. Do you think its possible to polish the top and the sides? If so that would look insane. Somewhere in another forum I was reading that Mothers billet polish was the best for this, if you intend to do it that is. :D

Western Digital makes the Raptor series. Aside from the see-thru window, they are capable of 10,000 RPM. Great job modding!

why dont manufacturers start producing harddrives with clear windows??

aside fromt he aboved mentioned raptor, the main reason is becuase haveing plastic in such close proximity to fast spinning metal plates creats static discharge, the raptors have a special coating on the window to help prevent this, reason number 2, the drives are desgined for use in a server enviroment, where temps can get quite high, the temps can get high enought for the plastic to degas, which would be bad... (see smoke vs hair on post #34) reson number 3, people have a tendency to push on the windows, if the spindle is attached to the plexy, this has a chance of pulling the platters/head out of line and causeing a head crash, or miswrite...

frankly im supprised it worked for him, only becuase he didnt support the center spindel, usually the whine like mad and easly come off balance... be very carefull about moveing it while in operation now if you want it to last at all...

also, (and im sure you know this) don't expect it to last, the drives i have done this t in the past have lasted an avarage of about 2 mounths.. so dont store any thing you you cant afford to loose on the drive, (i liked to use them as windows swap drives, as they acctually see activity that way, and at worst it will crash the pc if it goes belly up, reboot and windows will have set c back to the defualt swap drive. useing it for music will not give you the thrashing you will want to see.. ;)

Ya, ok so this thread was dead and buried but I finally got around to mounting the drive in my system, so back from the dead it comes!

Eyeballing it out.

Oh, and while I was at it I had some sound mat left so I decided to use it.
I think it looks a lot cleaner with it.
I had to fold in about 50 different little tabs to get it flat and ready for the matting.

Next went in the hard drive. Molex extension for power, IDE to USB cable for connectivity, and safety wire for a secure mounting.

Mounted.

Close-up. Note the safety wire cut and folded along the edge of the hard drive. Very clean I think!

And a couple shots in motion.

LOL, I love these shots the most!

And so I present to you the final product in the color of your choice!
