Hey guys. Got bored and thought I would do a quick experiment here and am posting up the results for the hell of it.
I wanted to see what the pros and cons would be of running an external USB3 HDD vs running the same drive on native SATA internally. So, I took my newly purchased Seagate 3TB backup plus drive, hooked it to a USB3 port on my Crosshair V and ran an HDTune benchmark. After that was completed I powered down the system, removed the USB bridge from the bottom of the enclosure exposing the native SATA and power connections and plugged it up to a 6gbps SATA port on my motherboard and ran the same test.
The results are so close I'd say it's just a test to test variance. I was contemplating removing the 3.5" drive from the enclosure and installing it to my system internally but I see absolutely no difference in doing so except adding some extra ambient case heat.
Each test was ran twice to ensure consistency and the only benefit I noted with SATA over USB3 was a 10MB/s higher burst rate. In fact, native SATA introduced a hair bit more of latency though not hardly enough to matter.
