I FINALLY got my drives set up properly last night to spin down in Ubuntu after dicking around for a week.
I set up a cronjob to run a simple command on an empty folder on each drive every ten minutes from 10am to 10pm so that they will not spin down. After that they should listen to the settings in SmartD and spindown after 30 minutes and stay spun down since nobody should be accessing them after about 10pm. The start/stop count went up by 1 since yesterday but the load/unload went up by about 49 on each drive.
What exactly do each of these SMART parameters mean and what would be an acceptable amount for them to increase in a 24 hour period. Im trying to gauge what is actually good and bad.
Thoughts?

Start/Stop Count - Im assuming this means the disk actually goes into sleep mode and stops spinning. This went up once since yesterday with the settings I have in place.
Power Cycle - self explanatory.
Power-off Retract Count - ??
Load/Unload Cycle Count - Im assuming this means how often the head engages or disengages the platter? This went up by about 49 on all my drives since yesterday.
Thoughts?
