I'll be buying 8 hard drives (9 with the backup drive) for a raid 5 array. all of them will have 5 year warranties. i'm just curious should i bother with buying more than one backup? should i even bother with one backup?
 
i'm aware that they don't protect data, and this array wont' be carrying anything mission critical. i mean i just need lots of space for anime and movies and isos and such. but anyhow. failure rates of hard drives... should i buy extra hard drives for when they die and how many? should i have 2 spares sitting around waiting for drives to die? should i have 1? should i go with 8? 0? toss a few numbers at me. i'm aware of the data loss risks.
 
I always keep at least one spare drive handy in case of a failure, two is better just in case. If a drive does fail on you, you stick in a spare, and while waiting for the drive to be RMA'd, or waiting for another one to arrive, if you have another failure you're running a higher risk not having another spare handy.

Of course I've had a RAID5 system die on me before, one drive failed, got a spare swapped in, and halfway through the rebuild process a second drive failed. Hard drives are always a gamble, best you can do is have enough spares and a backup :D
 
sounds good. i'll go with one spare i think and risk it. as most everything i have on there will be reattainable (pictures are kept in a remorte location somewhere on google's servers =D)
