So I have a user whose hard drive no longer spins up. The drive is a 500gb Western Digital Blue and when it gets power, it makes a repeated noise like it is trying to spin up, then it stops, then it makes the noise again, then it stops until you pull the power and power it back up.

I have it connected to a USB -> SATA adapter and Disk Management recognizes the drive, but says that it is not initialized(I assume because it is unable to fully spin up).

Of course the user has data on the drive that he "needs". I tried putting the drive in the freezer for 12+ hours(Have had luck in doing this in the past), but it is still making the same noises.

Anybody have any other recommendations? Or a hard drive recovery service?
 
Alright, it must have been a stuck spindle or a seized motor as I had it plugged in, tilted it on it's side, then let it drop onto the desk from an inch or two off the surface and it took off.

Guess this is his lucky day. I was going to use him as an example too and send out a mass email telling the others who never save anything to the server that this is what happens when you save everything to your local desktop.
 
Give him pricing from OnTrack to show him how much recovery would have cost him.
