So the 160Gb HHD in my netbook took a shit last week. I have since replaced the drive but am having issues recovering the data from the old drive.

When the old drive went bad there were no odd sounds and you can hear the drive spin up fin and hear the heads working, it just would no longer boot to windows. When I initially tried to “fix” the drive with windows recovery it would literally an hour for the initial screens to pop up and once it did get to the “attempting to make repairs to this disk” it just sits there working, I left it for no shit 3 days.

I plugged the drive into my main PC to try and salvage what data I could (mostly docs and some recent pics) and the drive initially only shows “G:\SYSTEM” then after a few minutes I get “H:\LOCAL” and “I:\RECOVERY”. The big issue is when I try and access LOCAL it starts searching and then hangs my windows explorer.

I am attempting to use TESTDISK to access the drive and it does find the drive, and shows the correct amount of data there, but it is excruciatingly slow as I go through the steps, like an hour to find the partitions, then an hour to analyze, etc. I got through that and was able to select the folder structure and started copying folders (started with USERS) and it is pulling files but at a rate that must be something like 1 MB a minute. I left it copying overnight and it was barely over 700Mb this morning. The files it is recovering are valid and I can open them (so far), but at this rate it will take weeks to recover the 120ish GB on that disk.

I had originally tried to use PHOTOREC and with just .JPGs selected it was showing something like 2000hrs to completion.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what would cause the speed to be so horrendously slow? Any other ideas of course would be appreciated.

The drive is having a hard time to read the sectors retrying multiple times when it gets back an CRC error.

I recommend that you use

ddrescue (available on any linux livecd)

to copy the entire drive to a brand new drive of the same or larger size and then try your luck at recovery tools. ddrescue will try to copy the drive sector by sector skipping around unreadable sectors then it will go back and try the unreadable ones.
 
Thanks that was my next course of action. I was also looking at getbackdata to image the drive and repair.

Ddrescue seems straight forward enough, I believe I have a copy already.
