hello!

it's been a while since i last needed to buy a hard disk, and now i see the prices extremely high!

they sell one 250GB at 80 USD!

i dont care at all about its speed or other features, i only need enough storage (ideally 1TB or more) at cheapest possible price!

any advise?

If you're in the USA-off to NewEgg. Egg is selling 1TB Sammy Spinpoint F3 drives today for $69USD.

I was told that the japan factory faced some problems, was destructed or something and this is the cause of the prices increase

is it true? it's hard to believe that all HDD companies have only one manufacturing location

Yes and no. The factories were flooded in a hurricane.

Prices were jacked up purely on the fear that the supply of HDDs would run dry, not that the supply ever did. Now retailers have discovered people will pay 3x the price for the same item, without regard for scarcity....so guess what, HDD prices never went down that much.

Those damaged factories have been rebuilt and operating at normal capacity for a year now.

Same thing with the cost of gasoline in the USA, price is regulated by fear...not necessarily scarcity.

In many cases, 80-250GB drives will cast as much as or more than a 1TB drive. They are either being currently made in very low volumes so will cost more, or they are leftovers that they figure you will pay a premium for. In most cases, they are used in older machines where hardware limitations preclude the use of larger drives (ie you have a device which can't just use 80GB of a 1TB drive, it HAS to be an 80GB drive) Mostly it is embedded controller industrial equipment that has to use the old/smaller drives.
 
A portable 500gb HDD goes for $69 at BestBuy. I would go with portable because it's easier to store in safe deposit box, or run off with it in case of fire or flooding.

Also, arent you afraid of placing 2TB of work, photos on a single hdd for risk of failure?

There are certainly better deals. $100 for 2TB recently.

I have several 250GB to 1TB drives that are surplus to my needs. They sit in my trash waiting my trip to recycle them. Not worth the effort to sell them. I guess the high prices you claim might be due to the fixed cost of doing business.

IME portable HDDs live underwhelmingly short lives. My theory is that internal drives are shipped to the US in caution tape wrapped shipping palettes, whereas external/portable drives are "inspected" with the TSA "screening" hammer.

The floods were in Thailand not Japan. It only happened in October so it hasn't even been one year since the event.

Oh. Salient details. :p

The larger point still stands. HDD prices are staying put. Production capacity was restored a while back...prices aren't high due to scarcity...they're high because companies are milking customers who are willing to pay.

costco has had 3TB external drives for 120-140 for a while now. can use usb3 or take it out and use as an internal. no warranty if you take it out though.

Plus the consolidation in the industry means less competition.....which nearly always means higher prices!
