HDD (MASTER & SLAVE) problem

ok so i just got a Maxtor ATA/133 160GB 7200rpm HDD and want to connect it as the slave HDD in my system) which already has a 200GB WESTERN DIGITAL WD2000JD SATA.

The problem is that the new HDD does not show up or register anywhere. I alreay have set the jump on the Maxtor to slave but was wounder if you had to do something special since 1 HDD is SATA and the other is just ATA. If you guys could help me out or point me in the right direction it would be great.....

You shouldn't have to make it a slave. Since you have two drives with different interfaces the lone ATA drive can still be master.
 
If it's the only drive on the channel then set it as a master drive.

Then check if it shows up in the bios.
If it does thyen it will just need to be formatted before it will show up.

If it does not show in the bios then check that the cables are in correctly, try swopping which channel you are useing, etc, etc.

Once you've got it to work, you may need to go back into the bios as reset the sata drive as first boot drive.

In case you don't...

I need to ask a noob question.

If I get a mobo with 4 SATA ports and 2 IDE ports...can I hook up a HD to each port of the SATA and 2 HDs on the one IDE port (the other port is for 2 optical drives), and run each HD alone, as in no raid?

I want to have a lot of HDs, but I don't want RAID, can I do that with a mobo that has 4 SATA and 2 IDE?
 
Im not really sure, but something is telling me that you can, just don't setup an array. Maybe read the motherboard manual(boring I know) and check the manufacturers website.

I am anal about reading manuals, I always read the manual for anything before I use it. Been that way since I was first able to read.

I have emails into the tech support of maker of the mobo I am looking at.
