HDD Jumper Settings

If my main Boot drive is an SATA drive, and I have an IDE for storage, is the IDE HDD's jumper supposed to be set to master or slave?
 
It can be set to either, just make sure that you have the SATA drive set to boot before the IDE one.
 
how about the sata drives. If I have 2 SATA drives and one is the boot and the other is for storage; does there need to be a difference in the jumper settings?
 
There is no Master/Slave relationship with SATA drives. The reason PATA drives have this jumper is that you can have two devices on one cable. The jumper lets the drive know which transfers on the bus it should respond to. Since SATA connections are point-to-point, there is only one device on each bus, so there is no master/slave setting on SATA drives.
 
That makes sense. Wonder why the SATA drives have jumpers at all though? =P

Well, here's the problem I'm having.

My config is 2 WD360s, one is the boot drive the other is storage. IDE drive as a slave for storage.

For some reason, recently my WD360 (the boot drive) will make a whirring sound (It actually sounds like the sound that is made when you boot your computer; that whir or whistle of something like the HDD starting up: except that I'm already booted into Windows). Usually this follows a BSOD. Then both drives will not be recognized by the BIOS. I will have to unplug and replug the SATA cables, and then the BIOS will read the drives and it seems to work.

Be default it will set my IDE drive to be the boot drive since the other drives weren't recognized, and when I reconnect and reboot I get an: NVRAM update ok!!

I'm not sure if I have some settings incorrect in the BIOS: but the SATA drives are read as IDE Master 3, and slave 4. The settings in the BIOS are set to enhanced with SATA, but the description reads something about that settings makes SATA read as PATA or something. other choices are SATA+PATA, and RAID I think.

I also tried disabling the 1394 controller, don't know if that will do any good.

On my original boot drive, some data did seem to get corrupted and I had to revert back to a stable time or version of Windows.

I've done the WD data lifeguard extensive tests and all drives passed, I tried replacing the SATA cables (the same type that comes with the mobo: P4C800-E), I've tried putting Windows on the other drive, swapped the position of the drives (so the boot drive would be either the 3 or the 4 slot), used only 1 drive and I've even swapped the boot drive for a new drive sent by WD.

However, I still got the BSOD once since the new install, with the BIOS not reading either drives (when running just the single old HDD boot drive, the error happened a few times). Things seem to be stable now, but I'm just confused about what's going on with my system. EDIT: I just had a BSOD with the new HDD when I had both drives running. Currently running just the single boot drive to test.

If anyone has any clear ideas so I can narrow down my trouble shooting that would be awesome.
