i have a hp pavilion dm3 and i couldnt boot windows. after the initial HP screen there is a blinking _. is this a hdd failure? i tried to goto the system restore settings but i couldnt access it. if it is a hdd failure how would i install windows on the new hdd because i dont have a cd drive.

It is possible, or the os could just be corrupted. Do you have a restore disk? There may also be built in diagnostics on the hp. read the screen as soon as you turn the pc on and look for a diagnostic or boot options menu.

dont have a cd drive and i took the hdd out and put it back and now i cant even turn it on. the power light flashes but the hdd light did not light up at all.

To install without a DVD. Prepare a thumbdrive and then go to the microsoft download page and get Windows7-USB-DVD-tool.exe (I couldn't find it tho, so i had to use google). It's an MS utility that formats your thumbdrive into a bootable drive and copies your windows installer into it.

He said the pc will no longer post. Or that's how i interpreted it. Is that correct?

Try with the hdd in first.
try "Try a hard reset, unplug the AC, remove the main battery, then hold the power button down for 15 seconds, plug in AC only and see if it comes to life, if not put in the main battery and try booting again."

Dont know if a DM3 is older than my DV2000, But FWIW I installed Win 7 64 bit without any problems.
