HDD failure. question

The other day my girldriends computer froze, I booted it up again trying to go in to safe mode and got a bootfailure error. I popped in my BartPE boot disk and it didn't even see a C: drive. I was like whoa and then checked in BIOS and it wasn't even detected. Turns out it won't even spin up. I tried the hard drive in my computer to make sure it was the HDD and my BIOS didnt even recognize it either. I swapped the only CD_ROM drive to the other controller to see if it was a controller problem. The CD-ROM worked fine. I was wondering if there was such a thingas a IDE controller tester that you can plug into the motherboard and see if the controller is busted. Ok my girlfriend is getting a new HDD, my main question is should I be worried that the MOBO will fry the new HDD? If there is something I am forgetting please clue me in.
 
hard drives are born to die, you try spinning at 5400-7200 rpm day in and day out, see how long you last. lol seriously, it was probably just that hard drives time.

i tend to eye PSU's before mobo's when it comes to assasinated drives. can't think of anything right off hand to test the IDE controller, unless there is an app on the mobo manufacturers website. you could test the speed with sandra, any weird results would be a warning to shut down immediately.
