HDD Corrupt? - WD2500JD

My WD2500JD (Western Digital 250gb SATA) is acting strange.

On very large folders it will take about 30 seconds to open, if it doesn't crash. I'm not sure if it's because the HDD is too full and needs a defrag session, or if its because the drive is corrupt.

I also have some bad (corrupt) files on this HDD, but I'm not sure if that is because I used USB to x-fer these files to an external HDD. They may have become corrupt while being transferred through USB.

Does that sound like my HDD is no good, or is it because I only have 10 free gigs and need to defrag the drive?
 
it will check the hdd for errors, smart erros, and bad sectors and the like....its WD's Diag tools, man its for diag'ing WD drives....its only logical captian.
 
nice guide...ill tell you what...ive been on this site about 6 months now and man...yall have some good people on here....when someone takes the time to write a huge guide like that...then im loving it....i do puter repair and it sure helps when you get in a grind and dont know what to do....so keep kicking ass :D

basic objective is to isolate and verify potential culprits
even if you fail a HDD manufacturers test it could still be the IDE channel, the memory, the cable or the drive, which is where crossparting to known good systems and components helps so much (and why so many enthusiasts have at least an antique second box)
when ot comes to corruption the odds on favorite is memory

I really like the demo version of ATACT and think its a worthwhile tool to add to your kit
especially when emplyed to test cables (using known good components HDD channel memory)
since like a mem test you can leave it running all night to spot intermittent errors

power is far more tricky, unlike the mobo which has a VRM (voltage regulation modual) the HDD lacks any buffer and is one of the more suceptible devices to power events which makes them a leading candidate for getting fried or corrupting as the case may be

It sounds like you have some file extensions that might be causing problems, although I am not 100% sure on that. There are a couple of issues that could be causing this, but that seems to be the first one that is coming to my mind.

When shell extensions go foul they can actually crash the explorer when you try and copy or paste, or right click on a file to do other file operations. In order to diagnose the problem you need to deactivate the active shell extensions to determine the source of the problem. Unfortunately you can't do that through the Task Manager, so the only way you can accomplish it is by running a program called Shellex View. Using that program you can disable any shell extensions that are running on your computer until you find the one that is causing the problem.

Hai no problem. I have other handy tools of the trade too. If you think that particular tool will help others you might want to add it to one of your FAQs as you suggested.

Yeah, I can do that if you like. That is one of the best little freeware gizmos I have come across in a long time.
 
I like they way you can just drop to the registry with it
damn I got alot of objects :p

Im going to get an html report of what its like with a fresh install as a baseline
(just as soon as I break this install with it :p )
